Where can I locate the guidelines to make RDP access to XP boxes as secure
as possible against possible intrusions, operating either on the XP boxes
and on the firewall?

You can use non-standard TCP port for RDP. You can change the default 3389 in
the registry.
This way you set an extra hurdle to pass while trying to crack it. For
someone who doesn't know that there is RDP enabled, it will appear that it is
disabled.
