Section Groups in OneNote 2007

I'm new to the forum - (so if I make a 'posting faux pas' my apologies up front ) and fairly new to using Onenote. I have Onenote 2007 on my computer. I have set up a notebook and have several Section Groups in the notebook. Is there a way to rename and/or delete a section group? I can rename/delete pages, sections, even the complete notebook but it doesn't seem to be possible with the section groups. (not great as when I set up one of them I made a few spelling errors which I'd like to change!)

Talks about deleting only, but there is sufficient information to rename ;-)

To be on the safe side close the containing notebook before renaming a
section group and reopen it afterwards.

Since Section groups in OneNote are just folders, you can rename a section
group by renaming the folder on the file system.
Here is how to do it:
1. Lookup the location of your notebook on the file system and note it
2. Close the notebook with the section group you want to rename
3. Go to the location from step 1
4. Rename the folder with the same name as the section group
5. Open the notebook
Note - it worked always for me even with the notebook open, but it was just
me playing with OneNote. You should be careful and close it.
Hope it helps.

You did better than a LOT of folks do on their first postings, or even
on their umpteenth! :)

Seriously, you included the version of OneNote you're using (often
omitted), and you gave a pretty complete description of the problem.
I've been doing online tech support in one form or another since 1985,
back in the days of CompuServe, GEnie and The Source -- hey, Rainald,
remember those LAST two? :) -- so I've seen a lot of attempts at
describing a problem. You did well!

Renaming a section group is pretty easy -- just right-click on it and
select Rename. (I'm using OneNote 2010, but I believe that's the same
behavior on the 2007 version.)

Thank-you all for the help. I have now renamed and deleted section groups without deleting the rest of the notebook (or anything else that might have got caught in the crossfire). Very amusing to read the comment in the article that Bernd pointed me to, esp the comment "Microsoft tried to make it idiot proof." I guess I am just who they had in mind.

As a side question on the theme of help (an being proof of an idiot). When I first used Onenote I went through the attached notebook on how to get started which was fairly good to get me going. However, things keep coming up which I don't understand (lots of things on the tool bars etc..) yet when I use the Onenote help it takes me online and then throws up links which are quite often only vaguely related to the thing I want help on. "Deleting Section Groups" being a good example. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something obvious, like my software should have some built in manual that comes with it.

For example, if you buy a vacuum cleaner you can go to the manufacturer's site and download the exact manual for the exact model that explains all the features. At the moment i'm left thinking if Microsoft went into vacuum cleaner production they would send confused owners seeking help to any site on the web that mentioned 'vacuum' 'or cleaner'. It all seems so vast. I do better with a google search! Hence the feeling I may be missing something obvious.

Anyway, thanks again for the help. At least I have a better idea of how Onenote is organised. I have a feeling I'll be back here soon enough.

You're right critizising the Help function of ON. I'm using Google like
you. My personal opinion is that OneNote is one of the best products MS
ever made, with the worst Help I ever have seen in MS products.
My German Help is nearly useless, because obviously different people
translated the GUI resp. the Help.

No, I din't remember those.
I started in the "onlone" world with CompuServe when I had serious
problems with the brandnew "dBase for Windows" and Borland support
turned out to be lousy (compared to what I gad been used to with
Ashton-Tate).

Sorry for answering that late but after having seen the replies by Bernd
and Petar I wanted to test thing thoroughly because the recipes seemed
really strange to me. And then the issue fell behind :-( :-(

Having tested things meanwhile, I do neither understand your problem nor
the recommendations given.

On my system under ON2007 renaming a section group just works the same
way as renaming a section:
Just a right mouse-click, then select "Rename" from the context-menu.
This works without any problem (back and forth).

Rainald
P.S. The same applies to *deleting* a section group

May I kindly ask why you suggested this way?

After my tests there is no problem at all with just doing it inside ON.
The right-mouse context-menu offers "Rename". And this woorks as it
should.
The files are automatically renamed.
The same with Delete.

Sorry Bernd, why did you refer this article?

1.) The article AFAICS talks about ON2010.

After a series of tests I must say that Renaming as well as Deleting a
section group in ON2007 works from the right-mouse context-menu (as
designed).

2.) Even for ON2010 I do not understand the author.
All of the options in the context-menu work fine for me with the 2010
Beta (under Win7).
I can not confirm the author's findings
|| the right click context menu that pops up when
|| a user right-clicks on a Section Group tantalizingly
|| displays a Delete menu option, but it is grayed
|| out and cannot be selected.

Apart from that I found another allegation which seems wrong to me:
|| And, yes, you are deleting everything inside of the folder,
||and no, it won't be restorable from a backup because the
|| backup was in that folder too!

If so: Strange way of storage design in the side of the author.
Normally backups are stored seperarely!

Because I never used section groups myself I looked for an answer with
Google. So I referenced that article I found.
But now I've tested it and you're completely right. No problem with
renaming and deletion !

Time for speculation:

Could it be that the OP tried to rename/delete the section group from
WITHIN the section group ?!
That's indeed impossible ... you can only rename/delete the section
group from a position outside the section group.

A GUI problem.

It may be rather dangerous to just pick out some hit from google and
recommend that untested!
IMO one must always be careful with references.

What do you mean by "WITHIN" and "outside"?
For me no problem when right-clicking on the group's title in the
navigation pane.

I can't see any.

Thanks for showing me.
Now I see ;-)
Yes, renaming and deleting section groups from the *tabs* area does only
work if one climbs one level up.

Using the context menu in the *navigation*pane* works for the open
group, however.

Now I see ...
I never use that expanded navigation bar, consuming too much space.

It's fascinating: so many little pitfalls in the GUI.

Oh I see ;-)
Could the fact that you gave the titles collapsed be the reason that you
did not use section groups so far?
I heavily use those (even nested)

On my desktop computer I hardly ever have the navigation pane collapsed.
There is enough space on the screen if the *task*pane* is closed *). And
navigating is ways easier this way.
And rearranging, deleting, renaming groups and sections and creating new
ones I always do there.

Different on my Tablet PC in Portrait mode.

> It's fascinating: so many little pitfalls in the GUI.

A "pitfall" in the case given?
IMO it's only too natural that one has to climb up one level if one
wants to rename or delete a section group. Would otherwise be like using
a saw to cut off the tree's branch in which one is sitting.

Rainald
*) BTW: I'm seriously suffering in ON2010 with the "language selection"
which forces the task pane popping up. {siiigh}. In ON2007 I had managed
to place a listbox for the selection in the toolbar. This is no longer
possible. As have to change the language every now and then it's
horrible now ...

No, I don't like deep hierarchies, because my personal experience is
that I'm unable to remember my own underlying "construction principles" ;-)

So I prefer a flat hierarchy combined with a (as in ON) well working
search function. "Chacun à son goût".

Nice picture, but I don't agree:
If you are in a page, you can delete it.
If you are in a section with many pages, you can delete it.
If you are in a section group .......

Right! "suum quique"

Yes. But right clicking on the "section group" tab in the tab bar does
not offer any context-menu.
IMHO this is pretty intuitive ;-)

I really can't see what the author of the said article might have had in
mind when talking of disabled (greyed) options in the cintext menu.
