O

OREALLY

Flightless Bird
Whenever I STOP a search in Windows Explorer.... while it is searching the
computer freezes up and I
have to go to task manager to end the search. Any reason or repair for this?

Thanks,

Oreally

Does the same thing happen when you search while in Safe Mode?

Agent Ransack may be a useful tool but I thought you wanted an answer about
the Windows search function, not a work-around with an alternative tool.

Apparently the problem can be isolated to the Seagate backup drive using the
XP search. Somehow stopping a search of the backup drive freezes things up
for some reason I can't determine. Searching the C drive alone causes no
issue!

Thanks for the feedback.

This is why I recommended that you run the test in Safe Mode. It prevents
most non-native programs and services from starting, thus letting you
determine if you're dealing with a Windows problem (which you suspected) or
a problem caused by a third party application (which it turned out to be).

What do you mean by "freeze"? You get a "not responding" in the title bar?
or what? How long have you waited to see if it gets to where you want?

Often you'll find excellent advice on a newsgroup.
Before you use that advice though, consider the
ramifications of it being wrong or even dangerous;
how important IS that to you?
ALWAYS verify and confirm ANY advice from a
newsgroup!

I think the OP solved his problem.

O

OREALLY

Freeze......meaning no access to any programs except task manager.... where
I can shut down the search. Everything comes back at that point. Searching
the backup disc goes on for hours. There doesn't seem to be a problem
searching the main C drive. No problem searching anywhere with Ransack.

Tried doing the search in Safe Mode......same problem with Backup Drive.
Stopping the search freezes computer. Did a check disc on that

REALLY.....I figured it out. It is the Acronis Image Backup file that is
confusing Windows Search! The file is a proprietary, image of the drive and
it causes Search to recycle endlessly. Removing that folder (About 90 G8)
solves the problem. Maybe someone knows how to specify that Search skips
that folder?
