Save-file dialog: Problem with double-click on folder

I love Win7, but there are a ton of little awkward things when moving
up from XP. I'll see if I can describe this particular annoyance:

When saving a file, with a lot of folders listed in the dialog, good
old "XP" would descend into a folder with a simple double-click.
Simple and intuitive.

Not so with Win7. When double-clicking a file that's on the right
side of the dialog, the first click gets routed to 'reposition'...IOW,
it scrolls the whole folder list to the left. So then, of course, the
second click of the double-click gets routed instead to another folder
that has now been moved under the mouse cursor. So the second folder
now gets scrolled to the left. And I'm still on the same folder
level, but now have to hunt for the target folder again.

The way around this is to first single-click the desired folder to
bring it into focus, etc. Then double-click it. Awkward, and I can't
seem to ever remember that, so my reflexes from years of Win95/ME/XP
want to just double click the folder, resulting in the above.

I ask about this on the slim chance that anyone can even follow that
description, and that perhaps there is a registry fix.

I have certainly not done any special things to my win 7, (except disable
the annoying auto-maximise) and my experience is that in this respect it
works the same as did XP; Incidentally it might be that you have described
it inaccurately - because when I save as and then double click on a file, it
asks me whether I want to replace it.

I've had this experience and have pretty much gotten into the habit of
clicking once, then finding the moved focus. Pretty much, but not yet 100%.

An annoyance I see as related is that when I click on a folder in the file
pane, the navigation pane is unaffected. It can take a while to find the
desired folder on the left.

Sorry that I have to limit my help to just commiserating...

Folder, not file. No overwrite or anything. IOW, when you go to
"save as...", then try to navigate to the target folder (in a
directory that has a lot of subfolders), this happens.

<g> Well, that's probably all anyone can hope for in this case. There
are registry patches for most of the big stuff, but this sounds like
another one of those places where Microsoft fixed something that
wasn't broken. Win7 is nice, but there are a lot of those. (Don't
get me started on the XP/Vista toolbar folders that could be dragged
to the desktop).

At least I must have explained it adequately. And I am in good
company in not being able to remember that single click. Just years of
burned in reflex, I suppose. I have the feeling the designers of that
particular feature did not suffer from that. <g>

I just opened Notepad, typed some garble, and clicked save as, then
navigated through the C drive, program files and so on down, and then up
again to C and down through users etc. and could not see anything at all
different from XP, or indeed anything back to Win95 and beyond. I reckon it
is a setting or specific to some software where the programmer hasn't done
the selection properly (that would be odd as it is standard fitting you drop
into a form).
