The icon will appear even if caching is NOT enabled, and if I'm not
mistaken, write caching is disabled by default to allow for "quick removal."
I never enable caching on any external drive and still use the "Safely
remove hardware" icon, both in XP and Win7. Less chance of damage/lost data
that way, even if it is supposed to be hot pluggable/unpluggable. The extra
5 seconds of insurance certainly can't hurt, IMHO.
