Repairing IE 6

A

Angel

Flightless Bird
Please help!

I am having trouble with my IE 6 freezing up. I was told it may be broken.
Can it be repaired? If so, how can I repair it? I am using 98se. When I go
to some web pages, the page freezes up. Example: http://oyc.yale.edu

TIA,

Angel

Thanks, Alan

I did that and am still having trouble with the IE6. Can't access that
website, http://oyc.yale.edu. Others too. That one I used to be able to
access but can't anymore. I don't know if they did something to keep out the
IE6. Maybe you can try it if you have access to IE6.If you can, I would
appreciate it very much. I would like to know if it is my machine, The IE6
freezes up on some of the sites.

Alan,

You got further than I. All I got was a blank page. The page froze up. I
used the 3 finger salute and it came up with that page (Not Responding). So
I had to use "end task" Sometimes I even had to shut down the computer using
the reset button because the end task did not work. Why am I not even getting
what you do?

I am using Maxthon 1.5.6 with IE6 and http://oyc.yale.edu/ doesn't work
well here. The main text is missing and the YouTube and iTunes links are
also missing. So there might not be anything wrong with your system.
Just some web designers' feel that IE6 is obsolete and isn't worth
supporting anymore I think is the big problem.

And I ran IE7/8 for over a year. And both of them are so slow compared
to IE6 it is unbelievable. And I also tested stopping all hotfixes and
security updates on some test machines and I had very good luck running
them this way. So I restored this machine back to factory state and
don't plan on getting any updates for it ever!

I also ran Windows 7 RC on three machines here for a year and that was
just awful! As this machine alone went from 3% idle CPU usage to 23%
idle usage and the CPU increased in temp by 20°F hotter just by idling.
Worse, I used to run 100% of what I wanted to run. Under Windows 7 it
dropped to 95%. Plus all of my high demanding PC games ran so much
slower.

If you want an install for IE6, you can get one here.

http://www.oldversion.com/Internet-Explorer.html

So bottom line, newer isn't always better. ;-)

They are right.
If you are so stubborn to stay at IE6 and SP2, you deserve problems.

They are wrong Rob! And so are you! I had problems with IE7 and IE8 with
the websites I visit! Take titantv.com for example, it is so slow under
IE7 and IE8 that I have to wait and wait before I can scroll or page
through it. Yet IE6 is super fast at this site and other sites I visit.
So what is good about IE7 and IE8 Rob? And no Rob, I don't have any
problems since going back to IE6 and I have no interested in visiting
that IE6 troubled site either.

:Thanks Bill,

I would have replied to Rob's post but all I would have to say to him and
others like him is: They don't require an answer. They are trolls!! and want
to start an argument.

Back to the http://oyc.yale.edu site. I was able to get to the site using
the address: http://oyc.yale.edu/courselist but when I clicked on a course
I got the same thing as before, page name (not responding). If I did not, I
could search, help and other stuff. One place it told that you can use IE 6.
Just maybe an old FAQ page from last year.

I downloaded the "msie60.exe" but it came out to be a blank page with
"msie60.exe" under it to install it. Usually they come up with a page with a
file in front to install them. No, I did not install it. Now what?

Well the courselist worked for me except the very bottom has lines and
dashes. Those are actually links under Firefox. I was using Maxthon
1.5.6 which uses the IE6 engine. So I tried it with IE6 alone and the
same thing. I tried the home page and that worked okay except the bottom
again. Maybe they are doing things with their server or something the
last two days. As I didn't see this before.

I just tried:

http://www.oldversion.com/Internet-Explorer.html

And selected IE6 and that bar on the top popped up blocking the
download. But I selected it and said it was okay to download and it is
downloading now. You are running Windows 98 right? If so, maybe I should
try this on one of my Windows 98 machines. This one is a Windows XP
machine.

Hi Bill-
I don't personally care what browser you use, but I have to point out that I
have IE8, and titantv.com is not slow at all. I can bounce between time
blocks, check details and scroll instantly. My point being that maybe you
have something else conflicting with your browser and/or that site. Do you
use Spybot Search & Destroy?

KCB,

Yes, I use Spybot Search and Destroy, only on demand. I am also using an old
OS 98SE, which means that I cannot use anything beyond the IE6.

Oh good deal it works for somebody! My sister just called me and her
bank made her install IE8 and now she is complaining that her computer
is so slow now. She has Vista and had IE7.

Matter of fact I did at the time. Just on demand though and I rarely ran
it. Why does it take something out of the registry or something that it
shouldn't?

Hi Bill,

Did you try that on your 98SE like you said you would? (that IE6 you
downloaded) What were the results?

The Bank also wanted me to update my IE6 to IE8, which can't be done. So I
ignore it! Your sister should uninstall the IE8 and go back to the IE7 she
had in her computer. Anyway that is what I would do if I were her.

Hi Angel! No the Windows 98SE machine is still buried in my closet.
Tomorrow I should have some time to do that though.

> (that IE6 you downloaded) What were the results?

I downloaded it on one of my XP machines. All of my XP machines already
have IE6. And XP machines wouldn't mean much trying to do the same thing
under Windows 98SE anyway. As while IE6, OE6, and Media Player v9 might
have all of the same version numbers... they are different between
Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Hopefully that will work and is great advice. Although I know that bank
and they used to require MS Money and wanted the newest version or it
didn't work. Now they want the newest version of IE or it won't work.
All I can do is suggest it to her and hope it works.

Sorry for the delay. Been away for a couple of days.
Not sure why you can't get it. I just tried again and it came up OK
after the warning. I tried the Courses and that page came up OK as
well.
My IE6 SP1 is 6.0.2800.1106 with all relevant patches.
Perhaps you have some security program that doesn't like it?

:Bill,

The only thingI do in the web as far as the bank is concerned is check my
statements and read their messages. I don't do anything about making
payments, etc. So, maybe it wont work for her.

Spybot S&D, when using Immunization, loads a bazillion sites into the
Restricted Sites list. This has been a known problem with IE8 since shortly
after it's release. I don't know what MS changed, but when I first
installed IE8 (while using Spybot S&D), my online experience slowed to a
crawl. Web sites would take _minutes_ to load instead of seconds. After
forum/usenet searching, I found that it was Spybot-IE8 conflict. I reversed
immunization, restarted, and it was like a new machine. I had to do the
same on my wife's and mother's computers, and a few at work, because I
pretty much used Spybot S&D on all the computers that I was responsible for
maintaining. Some have also reported issues with Spywareblaster along the
same lines, although I can't report on that personally.

KCB,

I do not use the Immunization.

I have another problem w/IE6, I tried to access a site I even put in the
trusted sites. When I try to access it, a gray box comes up with : Microsoft
Internet Explorer in blue across the top. In the gray box these words:
Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site http://kentwired.com
Operation aborted At the bottom is a button marked OK

I had even put in the www. but the address bar takes that out and leaves the
above internet site..

Can anyone help?
