(No this is not a joke) - Russ Grover MVP

I'm reposting this because I've noticed some Public newsgroups Drop off
today.
And it is a matter of time before this one is dropped also.

>>>>>>>>>>> Reminder Newsgroups EOL <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

What is Happening?
This message is to inform you that Microsoft will soon begin discontinuing
newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft forums.

Why?
As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now; however, the
traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the
past several years while customers and participants are increasingly finding
solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites. This
move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it easier
for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies and
make the content easier to find by customers and search engines through
improved indexing. Additionally, forums offer a better user and spam
management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging a
healthy discussion in a clean community space. To this end, Microsoft will
begin to progressively shift available resources to the forums technology
and discontinue support for newsgroups.

In addition to offering a compelling online browser experience, for those
users who prefer to use an NNTP (newsgroup) reader to participate in the
newsgroups community, we have developed a solution called the NNTP Bridge
which allows a user to connect a variety of supported NNTP readers to the
forums they would like to participate in and continue having the NTTP reader
functionality. You can find instructions on how to download and set up the

Microsoft NNTP Bridge
http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums/

Another "Non Microsoft" support NNTP Bridge can be found here
MS Web-Forums via an open source NNTP newsserver (bridge).
http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/

Which Newsgroups Are Affected by this Shutdown?
All public newsgroups will eventually be closed between June 1, 2010 and
October 1, 2010. Microsoft will be closing newsgroups in a phased approach,
starting with the least active newsgroups and moving eventually to more
active ones throughout the course of the next six months.

Where Should I go with the Closure of this Newsgroup?
Microsoft has a large selection of forums, many of which cover either the
same or closely related technologies to the ones found in the newsgroups.
The forums have seen amazing growth and are an excellent place to continue
the discussion.

For XP related questions we recommend that you start with Public Forum
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itproxpsp/threads

Should you want to visit the other Microsoft Public Forums, please go to
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/forums/default.mspx

Who Should I Contact with any Questions?
Send any questions about the process, recommended forums and timing to
NNTP@microsoft.com

Do we need both the 'Answers only' and the 'Forums' bridges, or does the
'Forums' bridge include the 'Answers' bridge?

The Community bridge can do *both* forums, unlike the NNTP bridge from
Connect.

If you use Microsoft's bridges you need two, one for Forums and one
for Answers. There are now two alternatives. First, MVP Jochen
Kalmbach's bridge:

http://blog.kalmbach-software.de/2010/05/26/ann-community-forums-nntp-bridge/
http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/

That will let you use one program for both sets of groups. The other
was just announced (at least I saw no announcement before today).
Here's the announcement:

*******************

SSI is please announce wcLEX - Wildcat! Live Exchange!, a free NNTP
Proxy Server for the Microsoft Web-based Mail Support Forums.

With wcLEX, Microsoft Users and Developers can continue to enjoy using
their News Reader for accessing the new mail groups.

You can download wcLEX 1.0a pre-release version from here:

http://opensite.winserver.com/wclex/wclex-1-0a-setup.msi
http://opensite.winserver.com/wclex/wclex-1-0a-setup.zip

Please use this support newsgroup

news://opensite.winserver.com

to report any issues or to make suggestions.

****************************

I think his use of "mail groups" is totally wrong, the "forums" have
nothing to with mail. Other than that, I know nothing about this
product.

Thanks to you both:

Having now discovered eternal-september and found these groups still going
there including microsoft.public.outlook, which disappeared from it's usual
place yesterday (and prompted my following this thread): do I now need to
bother with these 'bridges' at all?

1. microsoft.public.outlook.general is still up & running on the MS
newsserver.

2. NNTP Bridge has nothing to do with newsgroups. With NNTP Bridge
installed, you'd be able to access (MS) MSDN, TechNet, Expression, and
Answers forums in your newsreader.

Ah, but my questions watched on msp.outlook disappeared along wit the group
yesterday, but I now have it back via eternal-september.

So, in view of the generally excellent responses in the existing groups, is
there any point or need to add the extra 'bridges' to other fora?

No. The bridges let you access the MS web forums using your
newsreader. If you're happy with the groups you've found, you don't
need to worry about them.

The generally excellent responses will be slowly but surely fading away as
the MVPs and experts make their migration. Especially since MVPs won't get
credit anymore for the NNTP newsgroups.

However, unless someone's going to the trouble of pushing all traffic in
the Web forums out into USENET, nothing that's posted in any of the
forums will show up in any of the microsoft.* newsgroups you'll find in
the outside world. And, nothing you post in any microsoft.* newsgroup in
the outside world will find its way into any forum.

OK. I've gotten a Windows Live ID, set up the NNTP Bridge software, selected
the forums I want to work in. Now what? How do I actually receive
information? I seem to be missing something here. (See below)

I am just reposting a Microsoft post a as friendly warning
that msnews.microsoft.com will be going away.

Yes there are other servers that will pick up this group
however there will not be any "Microsoft"
Personal Monitoring them.

This may not mean anything to you, however
I do believe that others would like to have Microsoft's
Feedback on their products.

As with all information you find on usenets groups
you are free to give your opinion and use this information
as you wish.

Have a great day :)
And thank you for using Microsoft.

So what? There isn't any official Microsoft presence in these groups
anyway. MVPs are volunteers, not MS employees. These groups are, and
always have been, peer-to-peer.

That would be true only if nobody at MS ever read anything in this or

If that's the case, MS is as poorly managed as anybody ever might have

Microsoft "Sometimes" Listens to MVP's

Since we have an Ear of what is going on in the real world
Sometimes they listen and sometimes don't

As far as one thing that they did listen to?

Remember the VISTA Registration every 6 months they wanted to Pull?
MVP's said, OK we will never buy VISTA and never use it.

They stopped, it but the back lash was Deep
(I Loaded VISTA it ran slow so I removed it.)

And Last year they wanted to KILL this NNTP Newsgroups BEFORE a bridge was
created.
We said (MVP's) we would probably not visit the web only interface any more.

That cuts down a lot of information Microsoft can get from the public
unfiltered.

MVP's despite what people call them Most Valuable Pigs And other names.

Really Fight hard for users. We are not force fed Cool-Aid, and we are
involved in products.
(yes Microsoft sometimes doesn't listen, but sometimes they do.)

I'm proud to be a MVP and fight for things to improve products.

Moving everyone to a "Microsoft Forum" may be seen as a "Big Brother"
By some of you, but as you know the squeaky wheel gets the grease...

So Move to the new forum and Squeak away.
(You've already stopped XP from Dying this long. And Dell for still selling
on Downgrade rights)

However Moving to the new format (Via Web or NNTP Bridge)
You will definitely have a "GREATER" chance of being heard there.
than in another forum. ( By some other third party.)

It's best for "ALL" to stick together" there is more Power in 1 big Group
than in 23 small groups)

Does that Help?
