Read Mail button in IE8 not working

I upgraded from IE6 to IE8 today, and find that the Read Mail
button does not work.

In Tools / Internet Options / Programs / E-mail is set as
Outlook Express (same as it was in IE6, where the Read Mail button
worked fine).

Also checked Control Panel / Add-Remove / Set Programs Access
& Defaults / Outlook Express is ticked.

What else should I check or set?

TIA,
George

P.S. Using Windows XP with SP3.

The following is an issue with Windows, not Internet Explorer:

"Read Mail" button does not work in Internet Explorer

Thanks for the quick reply, but tried that and it didn't work.

You need to use the Start Menu (the Fisher-Price fluffy version) and not
the Classic Start Menu. Which one were you using? The fluffy version
must be selected to see the options mentioned to select what apps to use
for the Internet and E-mail settings. You must also have all instances
of iexplore.exe gone (check Processes tab in Task Manager). After
making the changes in the non-Classic Start Menu settings, you can
switch back to the Classic Start Menu. You'll also have to logoff and
logon to effect those settings.

Note that sometimes the settings shown are the ones used. You have
toggle the settings. First you change to a different selection, if
there is one, logoff and logon, and then change the settings back.
Although it looks like you just change the settings to what they already
were, you ensure that the registry entries got updated to point at the
correct apps. You switch away, you come back.

You could try running Microsoft's Fixit to re-register some of IE's
DLLs; see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813444 and click on the FixIt
icon.

You could try resetting IE (Internet Options -> Advanced tab). Be aware
that will disable all the current add-ons that you installed into IE, so
you'll have to reenable the ones you want to use.

Vanguard, thanks a million. Had Classic Start Menu, did the
switch to the other version, changed browser and e-mail from IE
and OE to Opera, logged off, back on, changed back to IE and OE,
logged off, back on, changed back to Classic Menu, and Read Mail
button now works.

Thanks again for your time, appreciate your help.
