RE: Volume Control in the taskbar missing

I currently have an HP g50 notebook running the vista program. My compute
experienced a brief shutdown for some reason, but upon restarting I noticed
the speaker or volume control icon was no longer on the taskbar. I right
clicked on the taskbar opening task bar start menus properties menu and under
the system icons the box you check for the speaker icon is greyed out not
allowing you to check it. What do I do next. Thanks
Jill

It's likely your soundcard is not present in the current hardware profile.
This happens from time to time. Usually it's the result of Windows update
loading a new driver that is not compatible. You'll need to use Device
Manager, expand the Sound category and see if any entries are shown
with either a yellow exclamation mark or a red X. If so, you'll need to
Uninstall the entry and reboot the PC. Usually this allows XP to detect
the soundcard and apply the appropriate driver.
