Program Control???

I just had a problem installing the Library Reader by Sony today. I first
emailed Sony regarding installing the program and was told to call in, so
that's exactly what I did.

After speaking to two different agents over the phone, I was finally
transferred/escalated to their "3rd" level support who connected to my
system over the Internet. The agent took control and was finally able to
get the program installed and running. He was moving too quickly though for
me to copy the steps required, but I DO remember something about "Program
Control" and having to add something like 4 executables into a program
setting or something like that.

I have been looking for this option, but cannot seem to find it. Does
anyone know what I'm talking about? Where is this so I can perform these
steps in the future if needed?

Could it have been Program Compatibility?
Enter 'program compatibility' into Help and Support search for details.

Frank replied to me directly as he didn't want to share his personal
information, so I'm including the instructions below. Data Execution
Prevention is what I was looking for. These instructions are specifically
for the Sony Library Reader program that comes with the Sony Reader, but the
instructions are basically the same for other programs. The directories
and program files will of course be different for other programs. I'm
including his instructions for the Reader because I know there are a lot of
people out there who have this program and reader who will run into the same
problems I did. Hopefully it will save a three and a half hour technical
support call.

Change Data Execution Prevention settings for Sony Library Reader

Click "Start".

Right click on "Computer" and select "Properties".

Click Advanced system settings. If you're prompted for an administrator
password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click "Turn on DEP for all
programs and services except those I select."

Since it is not listed, you will need to add the Sony Library Reader to this
list.

Click "Add". Browse to c:/Program Files (X86)\Sony\Reader\

Select "Reader Library" (This will be a shortcut) and click "Open"

Click "Add". Browse to c:/Program Files (X86)\Sony\Reader\Data\Bin\

Select "Reader Library.exe" and click "Open"

Click "Add". Browse to c:/Program Files
(X86)\Sony\Reader\Data\Bin\Launcher\

Select "Reader Library Launcher.exe" and click "Open"

Click "OK".

Keep clicking "OK" till all "Properties" windows are closed. You might need
to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Note:
To turn on DEP for a program, clear the check box next to the program that
you want to turn on DEP for, and then click OK.

Good information, thank you for posting it. I installed the reader and
had no problems; I wonder what was going on with this install...
