OS: XP, Vista and 7
Case: IE used for administrative tasks only, never for web browsing

What are the benefits of upgrading the IE from 7.x to 8.x in this case ?

You already have IE8 installed on Win7 (unless you are in the EU? domain.co
uk?)

I am erring and not recommending an IE update for XP (especially single core
processors) because of performance issues, but if you are not web surfing
then security and improved performance may not be your main criteria).

It sounds like you are a network administrator and are talking about
updating machines on your network? - no Internet Access? so long as you have
no gateways at all and all your domains are in the intranet zone there
really no benefit in IE8. Most of your Intranet Markup is probably
non-standard and is rendered in IE8 in Quirks mode anyway.

Some remote desktop applications are incompatible with IE8.

Public Access computer at your workplace. You should upgrade to IE8 on any
public access machines (some banks here are doing this to allow safe online
banking facilities for their employees) that you do not lock-down with kiosk
mode, but you should also apply GP restrictions to add additional security
and prevent users from changing IE's settings.

Regards.

How so? Because of all the performance problems we're seeing associated
with W7 X64 (which forces IE8)? Those cases are typically on MP I suspect.
Also, notice that some of them are reporting TabProcGrowth=0 as a workaround
to problems which may be concurrency issues. I don't know if anybody has tried
my idea of testing Num Procs: 1 as an alternative. <eg>

FWIW I have fewer problems with IE8 on XPsp3 than I do on Vista or W7
and I'm only running them on a P4.

Hi Robert,

Whats the workaround?

TabProcGrowth=0

I have been too confused with developer issues lately to concentrate on the
user side. I have a developer with a Google Map app and concurrency issues.
Maybe your workaround is the trick I haven't tried. (they don't want to
spend to make their site standards compliant).

Anecdotal, subjective opinion otherwise.

Regards.

It makes IE8 look like IE7 on XP (regarding task structure)...

http://social.answers.microsoft.com...r/thread/1b8b29b9-92ca-4647-b1ba-5f8af7b669e9

(Microsoft search for
tabprocgrowth (askie OR LCIE) site:answers.microsoft.com
)

See also muxy's thread (lately taken over by trolls). For some reason
the above search didn't find it but the equivalent search using Google
web search did find it. BING finds it too but Google finds more
(not just counting multiple posts from the same thread). ; ]

Then I really don't understand the "single core" comment because
I haven't seen any of these issues with my lowly P4. I'm hoping that
I'll be able to start seeing them on my new Tablet but then I'll have
to be considering all the new X64 drivers and OEM stuff too. All that
most posters perceive is IE8 hanging or not working properly
and they ignore what it is running on. ; )
