Problem receiving emails

R

r

Flightless Bird
Since installing win7 pro I have been able to send but not receive
emails (pop3). I have disabled AVG and router/windows firewalls and
checked all settings. Both Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird 3 are producing
the same result.
Grateful for any suggestions.

What actually happens when you hit the 'Send' button on Outlook?

Please be specific.

What happens when you use the "Test Account Settings" in Outlook? Does that
produce any error message?

The email passes to the outbox and then into 'sent'. The send/receive
indicates that the action is complete but emails addressed to myself do
not return to my inbox. I have verified that emails sent to other
addresses do arrive.

Many ISPs discard emails sent from "me" to "me". I don't agree with
this procedure -- sending emails to yourself is a great way to test
things -- but I see it quite a bit with many of my customers.

The fact that your emails to people other than yourself do indeed arrive
proves that your email is working OK.

I have sent emails to other addresses and have confirmed their arrival
by phone but emails to me from other addresses are not appearing at my end.

Are you absolutely positive you have configured the incoming server
settings correctly? Do you have another machine where email is working
properly that you can check your settings? If not check with your ISP to
be sure of the setting. All it takes is one single character in the
wrong place, a check mark in the wrong box etc to keep things from working.

Under guidance from my ISP support I created a new profile, character by
character, line by line, with the support guy checking each entry, which
unfortunately produced the same result.

I completely uninstalled AVG yesterday, unfortunately it didn't do the

What happens if telnet to your mail server on port 110?

First install telnet, as it is not installed by default.

Follow the steps in this article.

Then, open a command prompt, in it type the following. ending each line
by pressing enter.

telnet yourmailserver 110
user yourmailaddress
pass yourpassword

After you see the OK prompt.
Type list

You should see a list of messages in your inbox.
Try reading any message.

Type rtr messagenumber

Were messagenumber is the number to left of the message.

If you see messages there, then it is a local email software
configuration problem.

If you don't then you are not receiving email or there is an email
software running somewhere retrieving your email.
Try sending yourself a test message from another gmail, yahoo or hotmail
account, and then repeat the steps above.

Let us know the outcome.

I tried telnet but whilst it recognised the mail server, the
username/password entry stage failed. I reported this to my ISP who
confirmed that the username and password were correct as far as they
were concerned.

Many thanks to all for the responses. The problem is now resolved - it
was due to a setup error relating to my use of multiple mailboxes/passwords.

If possible, go to your ISP's website using your browser of choice and see
if they have a way that you can access your email through your web browser.
If you can, try the password and username that you set your email program
to. If it fails to connect then there is a problem at the ISP. (I have
personally experienced this).

If this is the case, ask your ISP to reset your password for you to
something other than what it currently is. A corrupted password file at the
ISP can cause all kinds of problems.

If this still fails, you may have to reset your modem to factory settings
and re-establish your networking from scratch on your computer.

Good luck

Glad You got it figured out! What would be nice though, would be to let
the group know just what the error was and the fix so someone else with
the same problem knows what to do. ;)

I take his remark to mean that he had gotten mixed up and used the
password from another account on the troubled account.

Something I would never do. (Yeah, sure!)

LOL, I have had moments of the sort, even on client's computers setting
up their Email. That's why I asked if he was dang sure everything was
input correctly. Sometimes ya gotta triple check!

Outlook 2007 has an error logging function that probably would have
shown the problem right away, and I have to believe that Thunderbird
has a similar function.
