Problem opening PDFs in IE8

M

Frequently, whenever my users try to open a PDF file in IE the browers will
open but only show a white screen. The PDF usually appears after refreshing
the screen, but sometimes it takes multiple refreshes. I've tried doing a
repair of Adobe and also totally uninstalled and reinstalled it.

Someone in the TechNet forums suggested turning off the HTTP 1.1 setting in
IE. The thing is we have two identical servers that users log on to, both of
which have the setting on, but only one of them has the problem.

We are running Terminal Server 2003 SP2 and using IE 8.0.6001.18702.

If anyone has ideas why this is happening and suggestions to fix it, I would
greatly appreciate the help.

Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode [Applies to IE7 &
IE8 in all OSS]

Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?

I can't tell you what the solution is to your problem, but after having more
problems with Adobe Reader than I wanted to deal with, I uninstalled it and
installed PDF-XChange Viewer instead, and have not regretted it one bit. It
does everything that AR did (with the exception of causing problems) and
then some. You can read about it and download it from here, if you'd like:
http://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer

I am in no way associated with this product or the company; I just like it,
and think it might be a viable alternative to what you're using now.

So far I have been unable to recreate the error in no add-ons mode, but if
some add-on or setting were causing the problem, then wouldn't it happen all
the time?

If the behavior does not persist in No Add-ons mode, one or more of the
usually-enabled Add-ons is causing the behavior (e.g., Adobe Reader
auto-updater and/or getPlus Download Manager).

=> APSB10-09 - Security update available for Adobe Reader and Acrobat
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-09.html

[Adobe Reader v9.3.2 should be installed by now.]

=> APSB10-08 Security update available for Adobe Download Manager
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-08.html

[Make certain that getPlus Helper Add-on is no longer present on the system]

=> Security Advisory for Flash Player, Adobe Reader and Acrobat (08 Jun-10)
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa10-01.html

[Updates for Flash Player, Reader & Acrobat are scheduled to be released
this month.]
