Researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography monitor the amount of plastic in the ocean and suggest there has been an increase in plastics by over 100 fold in 40 years. Pieces floating at the top of the ocean break down into smaller pieces. These pieces are now being used by the marine insect (Halobates sericeus) to lay its eggs out over the ocean.
