OT? Software installation

Flightless Bird
I hope this is not too OT. I'm trying to install some software (Abbyy
Finereader into Epson Smart Panel) and need to go to the program folder
where the relevant .exe file is. When I do, I see no way of actually
opening the folder. I'm presented with a dialog box enabling me to
scroll down and find the folder, but clicking it or doing anything else
won't actually open it.

What am I doing wrong?

If you right click on it and choose "Open", what happens?

A little box opens that says 'What's this?' This happens on any folder
that I care to try it on.

No. Just a list of subfolders opens, but I can never get to the actual
files within.

You have opened the folder to show the list of subfolders.
What happens when you left click on a subfolder?

Nuffink. As I say I can't get actually *into* a folder to get at the
files. The folders won't open.

You don't have to *open* the folder, just *select* the folder in which the
relevant.exe resides.

The trouble there is that there is an OK button which is greyed out. I
imagine that if I got to the exe file itself the grey would go.

A shot in the dark. You don't need to open it. Just select it. If what it's
looking for is there it will work. If the OK button is greyed out it's not
finding what it's looking for. Search for the file and point it there.

Merely selecting the folder does not cause the OK button to lose its
greyed-out. Obviously I need to be able to select the actual file.

But I know where the file is. It's just that when I try to install via
the software's own install procedures I'm faced with a dialog box with
all the relevant folders, none of which I can open to access the files
within.

Not really. Once set for the correct folder the install program could look
to see what it, if anything, it want's. If it's greyed out it doesn't see
anything it might be able to use. Not saying it does work that way, but it
can.

I like your theory. However, it doesn't seem to work. Clicking on the
folder doesn't actually select it. It opens or closes the list of
subfolders, but never gets to the actual exe file, which I know is there
because I've been to it via Windows Explorer.

There is probably something wrong with the installer, I suggest
contacting the vendor for the workaround/fix.
