OT: Missing MVP's

Hello
I've noticed on this group (and on the XP group) that a lot of MVP's replies
no longer appear.
For instance Winston on the WLM group and PA Bear and Shenan Stanley on the
XP group.
Replies from them are included in further questions but I never see there
original reply.
Have the MVP's gone to the forums.
Do I need to go to the forums to follow them.

Re: Missing MVP's

Yes, the MVPs and most of all the posters, new and old, have moved to the
forums, since the MS NNTP newsgroups have been discontinued.

Hi, John.

You are at least partially correct. :>(

Winston is still active in WLMD. I haven't used WinXP in so long that I
don't visit that NG any longer, but I still see both PA Bear and Shenan in
other groups.

Against vigorous protests from many MVPs, including myself, Microsoft
announced that they are closing these NGs and moving to Forums. Of the
2,000+ former newsgroups here, only about 200 remain as of today, and only
about half of those are in English. Of the 20+ that I subscribed to before,
only 4 are left - and one of them is 13 days past its announced closing
date. Traffic in all these NGs has dropped dramatically. I see only 4,114
messages in this WLMD NG in the past 90 days, to 5/15/10.

Many MVPs have already transitioned to Forums. In my experience, offering
help in Forums is much more time-consuming than in NGs. Simply splitting
our efforts between the two venues takes time away from both, and the time
spent there means that we have much less time to spend here.

My participation in Forums is still small. When I do participate, it is
almost always via the Community NNTP Bridge. That way, I can continue to
use WLMail; other MVPs use other newsreaders, such as Forte Agent or
Thunderbird or many other non-Microsoft choices. Microsoft developed two
NNTP Bridges, one for the Answers forums and another for the "IT Pro"
forums, such as TechNet. MVP Jochen Kalmbach wrote a single bridge for all
those forums and many of us like his "Community NNTP Bridge" better than the
MS versions.

If you'd like to try the Community NNTP Bridge, you can download it free
from here:
http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/

Or, of course, you can use IE or your favorite other browser to participate
in the forums.

Either way, most MVPs were helping users long before Microsoft invented the
Most Valuable Professional award - and, with or without Microsoft public
newsgroups, we'll keep doing what we do because that's who we are. ;<)

Urlay,
Still here and hopefully accounted for<g>
- I'm using Windows Live Mail to access this newsgroup via the nntp server. So far all my posts original and replies are showing up at this end.

Most of my input to this newsgroup are replies vs. original new post.

I think you've defined another bug ...er ... feature of WLM.

If you hit reply while IN the message from a newsgroup, it ONLY goes to the
person who sent it and not the group. As far as I can tell (and yes, I tried
all the usual keypresses) is that is the only way to respond to the group -
exit the message and reply to group from the list without opening the
message.

Sucks.

Put Reply Group on the toolbar. You can be reading the message in the
Reading Pane or in its own window and Reply Group will send the reply to
the newsgroup. Reply is meant to go to the sender only and most people
munge their address anyway. I don't even keep the Reply button on the
toolbar to avoid a mistake.

MVPs are a thing of the past and Microsoft has decided to abandon
them because they were completely useless and wasting unnecessary
time of customers who M$ had come to depend upon over the years.

If you have any questions then by all means post them here and you
will get proper help from non MVPs who take pride in what they
do. MVPs are here because they are looking for some recognition
from good customers like you otherwise they won't be here. They
don't have any sex life either and some would say they are
asexual.

Hope this helps.

Many of us have gone to the forums. But some of us are also still here
(at least for a while longer).

By the way, note that you *can* participate in the web-based forums
using your newsreader. Microsoft has what they call an nntp Bridge
available to do this, but even better is the "Community Forums NNTP
bridge," which you get for free here:
http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/

Using the bridge isn't perfect, but I use it since I find it much
better than participating directly via a web browser.

Try it and see for yourself. It's free and you don't have to make any
real commitment to it.

As with many things, I recommend trying the alternatives (especially
when they are all free, as they are here) and deciding for yourself
which you like better.

I'm not trying to talk you into anything, just inviting you to try
both choices.

Yes, but it's just yet another little software program of uncertain pedigree
and value to clutter things up.

If it has no real advantages why go through the time-wasted of installing it
and then removing it?
