OS says not enough space on disk

I am trying to move data to my Flash (8G8) and/or my 80GB external drive
(also US8).

There is 7.5GB free on my Flash and 57GB free on my external.

I have a file I am trying to move from my laptop that is 6.9 GB and it says
right away that there is no space on disk. I can move data to both drives
from my Laptop but not this large file.

I also tried to backup my Sql Server database directly to the external
drive and got the same error.

I am running on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with about 7.7 GB free.

What would cause this?

Thanks,

Tom

In what file system is the Flash drive formatted? If it's FAT32, the
largest file system it can handle is 4Gb. Reformat the flash drive into
NTFS, and you should be able to copy the file to it.

What would cause this? Not understanding the limitations of the file system
on the external media you are trying to move a file larger than 4GB (one
file, greater than 4GB in size that is) is formatted in. FAT32 most
likely - NTFS on your laptop itself. FAT32 has this limitation, NTFS does
not. Format the external drives differently or break the file ito smaller
parts.
