Optimal Way to Install IE 8 if IE 7 is installed?

Hello:

Would you kindly outline the optimal way to install IE8 ?

I currently have IE 7.0.5730.11 All essential MS updates are inststalled.
Except for IE 8.

IE 7 works fine, but I've heard IE 8 is more secure.

I'd rather take the extra time to do the installation in the most optimal
way posible so as to avoid problems later on.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been
extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows
Vista in a non-domain environment.

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run
as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update, Service Pack, or IE
upgrade! Instead, uninstall the update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade &
reboot. If that doesn't correct the problem, then try System Restore.
[Norton users will need to see http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html]

NB WinXP users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go
to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any
Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB980182). If a Root Certificates
update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full
advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then
check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates
offered.

Follow these suggestions - most of which are standard procedure for
installing software - and you are virtually assured of success:

1- Read about the new features of IE 8 on Microsoft's website (and
elsewhere on the web).

2- Read the Internet Explorer 8 Release Notes.

3- Make sure your computer is 100% free of malware.

4- Make sure your computer is otherwise problem-free. Upgrading to IE 8
is not a fix for problems you are currently experiencing.

5- Make sure all your software (including Windows itself) and drivers
are 100% up to date.

6- Make sure all your security software, as well as any other software
you frequently use and websites you frequently visit, are compatible
with IE 8.

7- Backup your personal files (documents, photos, spreadsheets, etc.) as
well as your e-mail, address book and Favorites; and create a restore
point. (If you're familiar with disk imaging, backup your hard drive.)

8- You may need to uninstall third-party toolbars from your current
version of Internet Explorer; or reset Internet Explorer to default
settings. When you reset Internet Explorer settings, all add-ons and
customizations are deleted, and you basically start with a fresh version
of Internet Explorer.

9- Download the IE 8 installer from the Microsoft website.

10- Close all open applications, i.e., applications with an icon on the
Taskbar.

11- Disable your security software. Turn on Windows Firewall.

12- During IE 8 installation, agree to "Install updates."

13- Reboot /twice/ after installing IE 8.

I dont at all mind uninstaling the third pary toolbars, but resetting IE to
default swould cause some difficulty. Is there a point in the installation
procedure where it becomes clear that I should reset it to default, or is
this advisable to do from the get-go?

I installed IE 8 as recommended here. All seems well so far, except that I
see two concurrent instances of the iexplore.exe in the taskmanager now.

Is this normal?

By two instances of ieplore.exe I meant two instances in the list of
processes in taskmanager, not in the list of applications running. Only one
instance in list of applications, two in list of processes.

Resetting Internet Explorer to default settings is suggested because
many users - not necessarily including you - cause trouble for
themselves by making inappropriate changes to their configuration.

You won't know if the changes you have made to your IE settings will
cause trouble until after the browser is installed...sometimes not until
weeks afterward, when it turns out that a website you're trying to use
is not compatible with your settings.

I've never needed to reset my IE settings, but I've made very few
changes to the defaults and could probably re-do my choices in a few
minutes.

Maybe a suggestion to Microsoft should be to improve the options
screen. Especially the "advanced" tab is a much too long list of
cryptic yes/no checkmark options, where it is much too simple to make
changes for which you cannot immediately see the consequences.

The installation of IE 8 went smoothly, and I'm satisified with this new
browser. As far as the need to reset to default condition, I didnt do
it...yet..So far haven't encountered the need to. As much as I love
Descartes, I put the him behind the horse.

work the "in private filtering" function , in terms of blocking content
from specific sites. The Help in IE 8 doesn't adequately address that.
Enhanced security was main reason for my upgrade. Is there a link which
addreses this : "in private filtering" better?
