A good place to start for SR problems is here:

System Restore troubleshooting http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

There are a lot of good solutions and links there.

Did you just install SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

If you have one Restore Point, you have a System Volume Information

Many tools like that have an option to delete all but the most recent
restore point, so the wound to your system could have been self
inflicted. Even the built in XP disk cleanup wizard can optionally
delete your RPs if you tell it to do so. Have you run that?

If you are compelled to look inside your SVI folder, here is an

What necessary steps did you take to see it?

RPs do not accumulate forever and is is very likely that you will have

explained easily.

Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee,

Let me be more specific. I found out that SR worked not as usual yesterday
after I installed Blackberry Media Sync for my cellphone. First of all
computer stopped to see the cellphone at all. So I tried to restore to
previous state of my comp. There were 4 point in SR. Three of them were
connected with cellphone software installation and so I used forth point -
System checkpoint that corresponded the same date and previous time. My
attempt failed. After I reinstalled USB driver for cellphone its problem was
solved. Today I look in the SR again and found only one point - System
checkpoint that corresponded today.
Thank you for your link but I knew about it and used it in part this day.

Which version of Zone Alarm are you using? If it's 9.1.507.000, you need to
either update to 9.1.603.000 or downgrade to 9.1.008.000. There are a number
of authenticated problems with 507 on XP machines, one of which is losing
prior restore points every day. Try the ZA forums

Thanks for your answer.
I've already described in one of the previous message my current antivirus
and anti-malware software. I used the link
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html and reinstalled SR. Just now I
upgraded the ZoneAlarm farewall.
I did not use any program that included words mentioned by You. Now, after
several reboots, there is SVI folder but empty. Yes, I made a new RP by
hand. Does it indicate that my problem is solved?

Is it directly proportional or inversely proportional? We need to know

If you reinstalled SR, that whacks all your RPs and starts over - that
is a good start.

ZA had/has some issue with RPs (I don't use ZA) but I think it did
something that just left you with one lone RP even though your SR
mechanism was functional - ZA had some problem with the old RPs - I
don't know exactly. Yes - you could say farewall to all your RPs with
ZA.

If you made a new RP and you see in in the SR calendar, your SVI
folder is not empty. It may appear empty to you if you check the
Properties (zero bytes) until you loosen the permissions and
restrictions on the folder to allow access (I sent the link to tell
you how). I would undo any loosening you do to the SVI folder when
you are finished poking around in the SVI folder so you do not have an
accident later.

Hopefully somebody else familiar with the ZA issue involving RPs will
be able to tell you if the new version of ZA has the problem
identified/corrected.

It sounds like you thought the SVI folder was empty when it really was
not empty because of a misunderstanding and since you were using ZA
you fell victim to one of the recent ZA afflictions where it deletes
your RPs for you (while it is protecting you of course).

So far, it sounds like you have no XP issues that need attention.
