OneNote stopped synching between desktop and laptop

After working on OneNote 2007 recently for several hours and making some major modifications to a notebook, I realized that it stopped synching between my desktop (XP) and laptop(XPpro) over my home network. Since then I've been unable to find a way to get the program to sync again between my computers. Nothing I've tried has worked to correct the problem. At this point I think the best solution may be to (1) preserve the newest version of my notebook that currently opens on my desktop, (2) if possible delete the older version of the notebook that opens on my laptop, (3) Try to again sync the laptop to the preserved notebook that has my most recent work on the desktop. The problem is that I'm not sure how to go about this and where to start. I've researched the OneNote help files and this forum but have not found a solution to troubleshoot and correct the problem. Any help on what I can do to get my OneNote notebook that's opening on my desktop re-synching again would be sincerely appreciated!

What I understand from your description is:

1. You talk about TWO versions of ONE notebook which is SHARED between a
desktop and a laptop (typical configuration).
2. The newest version resides on the desktop.

What I DON'T understand from your description (the most critical
question) is: WHERE resides your "original" notebook (the *.one files in
the corresponding notebook folder) ?
On the desktop or on the laptop ?

The .one files reside on the desktop and sharing is enabled.

So it is easy (from the ON standpoint) and at the same time it makes me
nervous, because your synching problems may have underlying network
problems ...

To the easy part:

1. I assume there are NO unsynched notebook changes on the laptop !
2. Close the notebook on the laptop. This will explictely disconnect
that notebook from its original. A kind of reset.
3. Try (I say try because now we may see your underlying network
problems) to reconnect your notebook by File, Open, Notebook and
navigating to your share on the desktop.

If you can reconnect/reopen, then all is done. You will have a full
"synched" copy in the ON cache on your laptop.

I tried every which way to get the laptop notebook to sync with the shared desktop notebook, including what you suggested. I also checked to make sure that the shared notebook was accessible from the laptop.

I decided to take a chance and try the optimization function to see if that would help. Unfortunately optimization placed ALL the notebook pages, etc. into the UNFILED NOTES. Optimization apparently completely broke up the notebook into pages placing them all into the UNFILED NOTES.

So, after about 10 days researching and trying to find a solution I ended up "recreating" the notebook using Windows Explorer, copy and paste, etc.

Today I (1) closed all notebooks on the laptop and desktop and then (2) created a "new" shared notebook on the desktop. (3) I then opened the new notebook on the laptop and tested it to make sure it was synchronizing OK. (4) Using Windows Explorer, I then copy and pasted all the folders and .one files that I could from the "old / original" shared notebook and pasted them into the "new" notebook that I created. In some cases I had to make new folders as the old folders simply would not copy and paste. A few of the folders and contents would not copy no matter what I tried. Perhaps those folders/files may have been corrupted in the first place and therefore would not allow synchronization to take place.

All seems to be working fine now and I only lost a few folders and pages which for whatever reason I could not copy to the new notebook. I only wish I knew what caused the problem in the first place and hope it does not happen again!

Appreciate your trying to help out.

Happy to hear that :)

Thank you for feedback.
Sounds like a long erroneous history ...

Great to hear that.
Thanks for the follow-up!

I have heard saying that computers are inhabited by Gremlins :)

All the best!

P.S. In case such thing should happen again - what we all hope it will
not-:
*Closing* the problem-notebook, running "optimization" and then
*physically* deleting the cache (with the Explorer) can be of help.

Why do you want that ?

The ON cache is located as the file OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache

in the path (on XP):

C:/Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\OneNote\12.0
