OK to uninstall XP Hotfix/Security Updates??? Out of ROM

I am trying to figure out if it is ok to uninstall multiple files:
$ntuninstallKB887742$ thru KB919007?? The PC I am working on has a C:/ w/465
GB and available is 1.64GB. Trying to find out where the usage has gone.
Unable to do a Defrag...not enough space available. Running XP Pro 5.1.2600
TTL Physical Memory 4,097MB
Avail. Phys. Mem 3.02 GB
TTL Virtual Mem 2.64 GB
Avail Virtual Mem 2.60 GB
Pg File Space 6.86 GB

Error msg came up: 110-Out of Memory space for ROM Options
Publisher SW??
Low Reg. Space

The $ntuninstallKB******$ files go back as far as 2006.

This PC is for business and uses Video Surveillance.

Can you help and direct me in the possibilities of 1) if I can delete old
files (KB's) and where else I can look to get more space on the C:/??

The $ntunintstall--- folders contain software which removes a particular
update. If you never expect to remove updates, then you can delete the
folders. It would be safer, though, to copy the folders to a CD or DVD
first.

The uninstall folders cannot be the sole cause of your problem.

First, you should lower the amount of space that you allow the system to use
for system restore. Then you clean your disk to remove temporary files,
etc. Your problem may be caused by malware; hence it is appropriate to
perform malware scans.

Those $ files are for uninstalling the windows updates if they are a
problem. Rarely, I say with a smile on my face are they a problem. I
personally delete all of them a week or
two after they have been installed whether by auto updates or me going
to win update site and doing it from there.
Do you need such a large page file? Almost 7G seems excessive.
Though video files can be very large. Restore dates if you have System
Restore activated can be deleted except for
the most recent ones.

You may want to try CCleaner (it's free)

It will remove the old hotfix installation files that are removable. But
remember, once you remove them you won't be able to uninstall that update.

You can also cleanup many other caches, temps etc. as well. As to the
registry cleaner portion CCleaner, use at your own risk. If you read
these groups very often you know there's not much to be gained by
cleaning the registry.

Video Surveillance - really? I would think you know where the space has
gone. ;-)

If you are comfortable with the stability of your system, you can delete the
uninstall files for the patches that Windows XP has installed...

You can run Disk Cleanup - built into Windows XP - to erase all but your
latest restore point and cleanup even more "loose files"..

You can turn off hibernation if it is on and you don't use it..

When you hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system's
memory to the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys
file will always equal the amount of physical memory in your system. If you
don't use the hibernate feature and want to recapture the space that Windows
uses for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

- Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to Start, Settings,
Control Panel, and click Power Options).
- Select the Hibernate tab, clear the "Enable hibernation" check box, then
click OK; although you might think otherwise, selecting Never under the
"System hibernates" option on the Power Schemes tab doesn't delete the
hiberfil.sys file.
- Windows will remove the "System hibernates" option from the Power Schemes
tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file.

You can control how much space your System Restore can use...

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Highlight one of your drives (or C: if you only have one) and click on
the "Settings" button.
4. Change the percentage of disk space you wish to allow.. I suggest moving
the slider until you have just about 1GB (1024MB or close to that...)
5. Click OK.. Then Click OK again.

You can control how much space your Temporary Internet Files can utilize...

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to a
size between 64MB and 128MB..

- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
something between 64MB and 128MB. (It may be MUCH larger right
now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
(the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10
minutes or more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
Explorer.

You can use an application that scans your system for log files and
temporary files and use that to get rid of those:

Those can help you visually discover where all the space is being used.

In the end - a standard Windows XP installation with all sorts of extras
will not likely be above about 4.5GB to 9GB in size. If you have more space
than that (likely do on a modern machine) and most of it seems to be used -
likely you need to move *your stuff* off and/or find a better way to manage
it.

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

You should now perform a full Defragment on your system drive (C:)...

BTW - memory (the error message you got) and hard disk space are two
different things - although they can be related and cause problems with one
or the other. ;-)

The error seems to point towards video capture software - so I say/imply
again - your video surveillance will take up HUGE amounts of space.

Something tells me that most of your hard drive is filled up with video
files. Although Shenan offered excellent suggestions to trim down, I
think you really need to figure out what to do with your actual data.
That is, if you are successful in freeing up a few GB, it still won't be
enough. Realistically, you want 100GB of free space (for a drive your
size) for adequate breathing room.

My advice is to purchase another hard drive to store your data on.
Simply copy your data (presumably video files). Once they are safely
copied, you may delete the original files on the PC's congested hard
drive. Then follow all of Shenan's advice. Once you are finished
deleting, *then* you can defrag (many make the mistake of defragging
first!).

BTW, I would rather you keep the uninstall files. In the overall scheme
of things, they don't take up that much space. But if this is something
you really want to do, the link Shenan gave should be helpful:

I'll second your recommendation of CCleaner, as long as its registry
cleaning function isn't used. Registry cleaner should not be used
because they are dangerous, not just that there's not much to be
gained.

Here's my standard post on registry cleaners:

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

have another question please: the 'win update site' you spoke of; can you
give me a little help in how to do set-up for auto deleting of uninstall
files? Also, how can I change the 'Page file' size?

Thank you so very much for such detail. Always appreciate that!! You have
given me a lot to do...can't wait to get it done! And yes, it is for a
business (not mine) and is actually used for surveillance. I haven't looked
too deep into the system to find out how much video is actually stored in the
files and don't know where or what the other 'stuff' might be but will have
to explore. I will definitely take all of your advise. Also, I did do the
Disk Cleanup but there wasn't much in there to delete. Can I safely delete
'Temp. Install files'?

Thank you for your help. I am never quite sure about the uninstall files.
There are A LOT of them. They go so far back that I thought it might be good
to clean out some if not all of them. Everyone is very very helpful...I
really really appreciate it. I am so glad this is available to the average
person (me).
