Just got done installing the latest patch to fix whatever deadly IE hole it
was that allowed the Google attack. Five machines. 1 Win 7 and 4 XP Pro.
After doing the mandatory reboots at the end two of the XP machines wound
up with destroyed profiles. It seems that nobody at MS bothered to test
(test? what is test?) the process of installing the patch and rebooting via
remote desktop -- the way I routinely perform all tasks on machines outside
my office. I wasn't alerted to that situation, having had years of random
mysterious profile corruptions occurring, before I tried to log into the
second machine and had it go belly up too. Made my way the the other two XP
machines personally and logged in and they survived.

So I guess I'll be spending even more time trying to recover from something
which should never have been allowed to happen in the first place. Leaves
me wondering what will happen if MS ever gets around to trying to patch
that ancient hole which has been around since NT days and which exists in
all operating systems ever since. They could wind up bringing on the
apocalypse.

IOW MS quality is rapidly shooting down the plug-hole ! Someone, in this
NG I think, recently commented, in as many words, that since Bill Gates
left the "helm," MS is nothing more than a "money making enterprise," and
after spending time recently banishing a stubborn ATDMT data-tracking
cookie, and tracing its' stubborness to a registry key that was persistently
letting in that ATDMT cookie via Ms's Live / Hotmail account + "Bing" IE8
search plug-in ....I tend to agree !!!

M$ used a sledge hammer to crack a nut this time and you fell for it. I
warned people on these newsgroups not to install the latest patch and now I
can see why M$'s poodles by the title of MVPs deleted my message.

The best advice I can give is to stop installing all WINDOWS updates because
there is no evidence that they make the system any secure. In fact, there
is evidence that they do more harm than good to the system and you are the
classic example of this.

Pigs are pigs and they should be slaughtered and eaten unless you happen to
be a Muslim or Jewish or vegetarian.

Peter Foldes sister is neither but she is professional hooker!.

And these references help correct my MS-patch-induced problems how? I have
never had a Mozilla patch do any damage at all to a system and I don't use
Mac. And I'm still left with two trashed systems I will have to repair
through hours of labor and all because MS didn't spend enough (any?) time
testing a fix for a bug that they've known about since September. Here is a
reference that actually does bear on the matter at hand:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=5324&tag=wrapper;col1

You can believe me when I say that if MS hadn't made IE part of their
update functionality I would never use it but since it _is_ intertwined
with it I have little choice in the matter. (and yes I know about manual
patching but I should not be forced into even more work trying to keep my
systems up to date and semi-protected)

You can call Microsoft and get FREE tech support for patches that go awry, I
*believe* the number is 800-936-4900, but please look it up yourseof to make
sure I am correct, as I just have it scrawled on a sticky note on the wall.

You didn't ask for help, you just posted a rant IIRC.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB978207).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB978207), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
Consumer IE7 queue (which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Or you can...

I didn't install it, but I'm on Vista and I think I have Auto-updates turned
on - BUT, that means you are supposed to still have THE CHOICE of WHEN to
install the patch - well, about 20 minutes ago, my system shut down and
rebooted on its own, after just recently seeing the "patch in question"
(Chinese-Google-Ginsu-Patch) - so, this begs the question HOW MUCH CONTROL
DOES M$ HAVE ON MY SYSTEM?!

Seriously, I [ALWAYS] postpone and wait until I'm ready, but this time, I
was right in the middle of finishing something and M$ gave NO WARNING! Just
the little bubble that "patches are ready to be installed - blah blah." I'm
fine with AUTO updating (on this particular Vista workstation), but that
doesn't mean M$ gets AUTO-CONTROL of my workstation and gets to patch &
reboot it when they choose!
That's just plain WRONG; no matter HOW critical the patch is! If I am
finishing a multimillion dollar proposal and you (M$) then FORCE a patch on
me; and FORCE a reboot, then I've just lost thousands of dollars - and maybe
even the entire proposal. Yes, I "save" quite often, so don't lecture me - my
point still stands - THIS behavior needs to stop! This happened at about
9:40pm Central Time, fyi on Jan 22.
Just another example of M$ being "in control."

In many ways, I agree with many of the points of ANONYMOUS below - I have
had systems - up until 2 weeks ago, running Windows Server TWO-THOUSAND! with
ZERO patches, and ZERO problems! I tried the first round of Windows server
2000 patches - and everything died. I rolled back, left it alone, and it has
been running for 6 years, without problems. I have found numerous patches,
within the past 2 months, for XP Professional and Vista, that break more
things than they fix.

I work for a very large nationwide retailer, and 2 of the M$ patches related
to "making XP happy with Windows Server 2008," caused a lot of havoc, WAY TOO
MUCH time and effort to troubleshoot and find that those 2 patches caused the
issue(s). Rolled back those 2 patchs and BOOM - all is well. We set WSUS to
NOT deploy those patches and so the story goes.
