I'm not sure I can believe the inanity of some of these posts....
....and the purile, nonsensical profanities are just, well..infantile.

What a waste of a life to be involved in this absolute ridiculous
nonsense...
....are the wives and girlfriends watching this?

If I were a woman..and reading this stuff I truly would be dismayed at the
capabilites of the male character..If I were a feminist, it would be just
sweet confirmation of male stupidness...

As a man...I am ashamed..

Nobody is forcing you to read 'em. Just FYI.

Why would the wife want to read the shit posted here?

'feminism' doesn't necessarily mean believing in 'male stupidness'.
according to another meaning it is just about equal rights.

agree about the shenanigans but filters help a lot.

I'm married to one...(..a feminist, that is)

I agree with you wholeheartedly, by the way.

Yes. I do that as well, just thought I'd make a comment, that's all...
It's a shame that a few idiots can, and do, spoil it for the many...
These NG's, particularly the ones where knowledge (..rather than opinion)
can be extended to others are useful forums...
The idiots with their profanities and infantile ethos and comments are
meaningless and worthless.. as you say, once found out, killfile keeps them
out of the loop for more sensible discussion..
I have to say, I'm quite new here and reasonably dismayed that in such a
group this behaviour even prospers....
Any good lists of the entire posters here that need putting in a
killfile...? (some are obvious, of course...)

I once made the comment in some 'advocacy' newsgroup that the discussion
had really gone downhill and I was told it was always such.

I seem to remember better times when people would go at one another but
the points were substantive. sure, there were distortions,
misrepresentations and of course some name-calling but substance
outweighed puerility.

and that stuff was also mostly confined to 'advocacy' and didn't spill
over so much in a 'technical' group like this.

anyway, I'm getting comfortable with my filters like well-worn galoshes.

so back to technical topics....

Thank you I second that. I am getting some idea of who to killfile here to
get coherent answers.

As a woman thinking of upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 on a laptop (I
already have the "Starter" version on my netbook) I was checking to see if
any useful information was on this newsgroup.

I have queries. Having killfiled someone called "Alias" and any subject
with the word "alias" in the heading why am I still getting the followup
comments "Re:alias". Do I have to junkfile "Re:alias" as well.?

And...Is it possible to killfile capital letters in Vista or Windows 7 as
anyone who posts a heading in caps. is not worth reading.

Try using self control and only read the posts you're interested in
instead of wasting your time with filters.

That wouldn't be a function of Vista or Windows 7, it's up to your
newsreader to killfile posters. Your headers show you're using Windows
Mail and I don't believe that capability exists, maybe someone else
could suggest something?

Self-control doesn't help with KevPan's out-of-control thread
creation that is truly disruptive.

I had KevPan KF'd.......the only KF entry......but some still
choose to reply to him, namely Yanaire, so I too ended up with
a bunch of orphaned posts starting with RE:.

XNews does have the ability to kill entire threads like that,
but I lack the motivation to figure it out.

My reply to "Crash" does that neatly. If you missed it, here it is
again:

First, close Xnews and open xnews.ini with notepad, copy and past this
line, I put it in right before the "Compose" section but I'm not sure
it matters:

[Popups]
ArticleList=acaAddToScore,acvRevealThread,acaReConsThread,-,acaMarkAllRead,acaMarkAllUnread

Now open Xnews and make sure under "Special" you have "Enable Scoring"
and "Hard Kill" selected, close and restart Xnews.

Now, when you see a troll's thread, just right click, select "Add
to score file" from the, popup check "Kill", set expiration to
whatever you want, push the "Subject" button and be sure "Matches"
is selected, click the "Rescore on Apply" box and click "Apply".
You should now see the entire thread marked -9999 and if you restart
Xnews, the entire thread will be gone.

Thank you. I will check that link up.

BTW I've just experimented with killfiling "Re: Alias" as one word in
subject heading ( space included) in Windows Mail and it wiped out the rest
of Alias followers' followups. It looks like I've found myself a way of
getting rid of some un-needed threads. It worked with "Re: ANN" as well -
so that is one caps problems solved!

Note: Alias doesn't have any 'followers', regardless of what
someone might say. Maybe you meant followups(?).

So what happened to the 20'ish or so posts from the middle of

I will try that, but also have been kill filing the folks who are not

What was it changed to? I cleared the whole set of messages on the 20th as
most messages seemed to be followup rants.

If not "followers" as such why bother with answering trolls anyway?

I'm nearly in my 70's and wouldn 't mind trying out Ubuntu on one of my old
machines but this isn't the place for it.
