Office Update Error 646 Are You Kidding Me?

Forgive me if this has been covered a zillion times, but the many
references I find on the web are conflicting and ultimately not helpful.

I first encountered this error during a routine Windows update on my
previous system. All the Win 7 updates were applied as normal, but the
two latest Office 2007 updates failed due to error 646. I clean my
registry as part of weekly maintenance, so I was dubios of those
articles suggesting registry conflicts as the cause, not to mention the
fact that I had no problem with Office updates in the past. In any
case, I ended up apply the two fixes manually and all was fine.

Flash forward to today. I built a new i7 system and installed a full
version of Win 7 on a brand new out of the static package hard drive.
Everything went smoothly and I installed Office 2007 Pro. It
automatically attempted to update itself and all 19 updates, including
service pack 2, failed due to this error! How could there be registry
conflicts on a pristine system? No other software was even installed at
that point. All the Win 7 updates proceeded without a hitch. I can't
help but suspect that something is happening on Microsoft's side and the
thought of doing 19 manual updates is not terribly appealing to me. Any
useful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Error 646 = You need to put in your Office install CD\DVD into your machine while
downloading and installing updates from Windows or Microsoft Updates. That solves
the error 646 issue

Placing the installation disk in the drive didn't work. All 19 Office
2007 updates failed again. Any ideas short of manually installing each
one? Thanks.
