I hope I can provide some clarification. Windows 7 refers to the latest operating system. Office is a software program. The two are not correlated. The latest version of Office (Office 2010) is available for purchase in June, but the Beta version (a trial that expires in October) can be downloaded now: [FONT=&quot]http/www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx[/FONT].

RTM is also available now via MSDN and SA.

OFFICE 95 included Word 7 and etc but it was still Office 95. Office came in the
following PC versions 95,97,98,2000,2002,2003,2007 and now Office 2010
If you are talking about Word and etc then there was a version 7 starting with Word

I wasn't aware that there was an OFFICE 98 - there was certainly OUTLOOK 98
which was a free upgrade for OUTLOOK 97....

While Office versions were not "marketed" as v7, 12, etc... internally that
is how they are often referred to as. For example, if you have Office 2007
installed on your machine, the folder structure is "CProgram
Files\Microsoft Office\Office12". Office 2010 is the same path replacing 12
with 14.

When talking to internal engineers and technical advisors it is also called
by the above nomenclature.

I have to agree with Peter on this one. I can find no mention of Office7
here

refer to any version of Office as "7". I don't know about "technical
advisors," but I've been on the phone with tech support a few times and not
a one of them ever referred to any version I was calling about as "7." I
started with Office 3.0, skipped 4.0, then worked with every Windows version
from Office95 through Office 2003 before I retired. No one I knew ever
referred to any of them as Office 7 in my presence.

It depends on what level you are dealing with MS on. Regular L1 through l4
(typical support tiers most end users and non-SA customers deal with)
wouldn't know the internal version numbers as it is not in their scripts nor
marketing material. These short version numbers were not compliant with the
branding strategy so therefore not pushed to the "front lines"

Dealing with product engineers, TAMs, product specialists, participating in
TAPs, etc you would.

I agree. Office is a product by itself containing multiple separate
applications (of course, they don't update just one application so all
of them will have the same major version number). You can't take the
internal version of these applications and say Office has that product
name. What happens when they add a new product that is the first version
while having Word/etc v14? Call it "Office 14 except ProductXX 1"? They
put one name on the package and that means all the applications inside
are a part of this package.

The idea was to tell the OP that there will never be an "Office7".

FWIW, I have Office 2007 installed and there's a folder on my computer
under "Program files\Microsoft Office" called "Office12" containing all the
EXEs, there's another one called "Document Themes 12".
