Occupy Oakland Saturday Night Mayhem

Peaceful protests which turn violent are never good for spreading the word about the protesters' concerns. Instead, people marginalize the cause. Oakland protesters need to be very cautious about not becoming extreme or they will lose people's interests. For example, the number of people viewing the Occupy livestream used to be in the thousands. It's around 500 as I write this post.

Tonight, NYC is marching in support.

Maybe people just don't care they are being ripped off by corporations. It is easier to sit and watch TV.

Yes, disrupting someone else's daily life is easier than offering a cogent, persuasive point that changes that life for the better.

But should the police be reacting in a manner extreme relative to the protests? Are they creating the problem?

It is what it is. As I understand the way it works, each police department has its own rules for when to act against or for what. "Should" is an ethical or other belief system issue addressed by public policy, such as selecting the mayor or other city officer who translates that policy into rules for police to follow. From that view, we get what we vote for. Apparently, most people voted for city officials who chose for the police action recorded. Interesting that the number of views of this recording has declined over several days.
