I have the 8500 and once the sensors detect empty color cartridges it won't
print anymore. Don't know of a workaround, wish I did.

Will a black cartridge fit into the color cartridge's slot?

Since printers are designed for the express purpose of selling ink, it
probably isn't possible.

My Epson print driver has an option in the Advanced settings called
"Black Ink Only". Do you see anything similar for your HP?

Printers->Epson XYZ->Print Preferences->Advanced->Black Ink Only

Most printer drivers I have used have an option to print black & white
instead of color.

When I choose File | Print, I can click on a button called Properties. In
the Main tab there is a button called "Grayscale Printing".

Since this is a Canon, your mileage is sure to vary, but the above might
give you an idea how to find it in your case.

This is not guaranteed to use only black ink, but give it a try.

Black Ink Only on my F2480.

Yes, you are right but even when Black only is invoked it refuses to print
until the yellow "empty" cartridge is replaced. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

And they love their inks dearly, cost me over $130 for the XL cartridges not
too long ago. They have to be making a lot off those.

Me, I gave up on mine. After putzing with the cartriges once too often
to get them to work dumping 1/4 of them to fush for about 20 prints -- I
dropped it into file 13 and replaced it with a Brother Laserjet.
Haven't wasted any time putzing with cartridges since. HP has lost me as
a customer, I am not sure I would take one if it was free with 3 sets of
cartridges.

I tried that, worked good until you wanted color. Then you had to
purse/clean 4 or 5 times before they worked again. Losing ink like
crazy of course. HP is totally wasteful at this.

Initially HP ink jets were good, but in the alst 4-5 years they have
become the biggest time wasting POC out there.

I used to have a Canon BJ600, all colors were seperate and it would work
on black only. Best idea going. But for HP, it is about screwing the
consumer on cartridges.

That's the other brand I chose...I have a Canon MX850 all-in-one. It's
served us well for a couple of years now. The only problem is once it a
while it loses it's mind & we have to turn it off for a few seconds.

I replaced an EPSON RS630 (IIRC), that worked great, and an HP 4L that was a
work-horse for years, with an HP Officejet Pro 8500, I thought it would be a
good printer to do color and cheaper than a laser (so they claim). Probably
had 20-30 hours invested to get it to work on network, their tech support
could not get it to work. The 8500 quit just after it went out of warranty,
constant paper-jam error. Binged the problem and got appx 20K hits just for
that one problem. Worked through all fixes-no go, contacted tech support and
went through all their fixes (some were repeats)- no go. Took their offer
for a refurbished at reduced price, got it last night. Been trying to get it
to work since this morning and no go. Will print test page manually, the
install software can see printer, IP address, MAC address, but won't
communicate with it.
Printer is setup on same router with same settings and won't work. Contacted
router tech support, they gave me a tip, won't work.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, HP printers are a POC. I will probably
never buy another HP printer.

I got the printer to work, if anyone wants the steps let me know and I'll
email to you. If you think I should post here, let me know and I will do

I'd like to see whatever worked (as well as the specific issue or error
message you were getting) so that should someone else have the same there is
a working solution archived somewhere for when they search.

Problem on this printer was that computer and software could/would not
communicate with printer so install kept failing. Printer is seen,
identified, IP address and MAC address are there but no communication. HP
gives you a list of specific ports that have to be allowed in your firewall.
On first printer I just set open access to all ports for that device in my
router firewall and all was good, wouldn't work on this printer. Went
through and set all individual ports allowing access and no go. Turned
Windows Firewall off, router firewall off and nothing would work. Tech
support from router tried to help and no go. HP tech support kept pointing
me to the same page, with the same steps and none of them worked.
After a lot of trial and error, here's what I found to solve the problem.
I removed all software using the install DVD and selecting uninstall. Shut
computer down, printer off and connected printer direct to computer with
ethernet cable. (No router in this configuration.) Restarted computer,
installed software and when it gets to point it is going to search for
devices I turn printer on and it installs. Communicates with computer and
prints from software commands. Removed printer from list of printers in
control panel, shut computer and printer down, reconnected printer to router
and router to computer. Restarted computer, started install DVD, selected
"Add device," when it gets to the point it is going to search for devices I
turn printer on and it installed. Communicates and prints from software
commands.
Hope this helps someone. I emailed HP's tech support with this info, whether
they add it to their knowledge-base is anybody's guess.

With any luck, people with HP printer problems will contact you instead of
HP support :)

I recall that when I first set up my Canon, the manual told me to connect
it by USB until it was working; after that I could plug it into the router
Ethernet port (this printer lacks wireless). The HP instructions and the HP
support team should have known that :-(

Actually, that's what made me think of trying the procedure I used. There is
a wireless model of the same printer I have and in the instructions is says
if you have trouble setting it up wireless to use a USB cable to set it up,
then try to set it up wireless. After all the time I had in, I didn't figure
I had anything to lose at that point. Glad it worked and hope it saves
someone else from a lot of aggravation.
