Not booting laptop XP3

After one of the grandkids worked their magic on this toshiba laptop, a
system boot produces the following error: "system32\drivers\ntfs.sys file is
corrupt or missing". Attempted a system recovery "R", does not show which
version to recover so just did a simple Dir command at the C: prompt "error
occured during directory enumeration". So next step was to attempt a CHKDSK
and see what that produces. At about one hour later, it is @ 20%. Assuming
that the check disk does not "fix" anything and typing commands into rename
the ntfs.sys file to .old and copy a fresh one in there for repair does not
work, what would be my next move. ??

Depends what was done to get it to this state.

It is Windows XP ______ Edition with Service Pack 3 32-bit. Most likely
Home, could be professional (would be nice to know.)

Next time - don't let them (nor should you) use the computer with
administrative rights.

Guessing you are following this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822800
and/or
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/com...ssing-or-corrupt-ntfssys-error-in-windows-xp/
(Essentially.)

Your next move - a repair installation with true installation Windows XP
media (not a restoration/recovery set) that has service pack 3
integrated/slipstreamed into it already.

Could be the drive is dying too.

Sonnds like they pulled the plug or pressed the power button without
shutting down.

Hopefully chkdsk will finish, then you can work on a next step if
needed, and you need to be running chkdsk /r to fix anything.

Let chkdsk finish and correct any problems it might find. It may take
a long time to complete or appear to be 'stuck'. Be patient. If the
HDD light is still flashing, it is doing something. Keep an eye on
the percentage amount to be sure it is still making progress.

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD or are you using
some kind of system recovery CD that came with the laptop, or are you
not sure...

There are probably plenty of copies of ntfs.sys on your HDD you can
copy in if it is really missing or corrupt - that is easy, but chkdsk /
r needs to run clean and you will need to be in Recovery Console to do
the copying. If you are not sure you are in the Recovery Console or
what CDs you have, make a bootable Recovery Console CD and then you
will be sure.

If the meantime, you can use Google to search for that message and
read about it. Some of the hits will not apply, but some of them can
help you think about what to expect next if chkdsk /r does not fix
things.

Its a little weird, last night CHKDSK /R went to 85% then back to 50%, this
morning it is sitting on 62%. I am using a genuine XP Pro disk. Laptop
originally came with Home edition, but bought a new copy and immediately
changed to XP Pro. It was used in an office environment for ~ 2 yrs. Just
noticed it is now 64%, slow but sure.

Well this is not working. CHKDSK went to 66% and then back to 50% and
stopped. Now trying to format the HDD, is holding @ 2%, been there for
quite a while. Now think the HDD is toast!.

Last week I bought a 2.5" 80GB HDD for $19. (labeled not for laptop use)
Got the Factory OEM HDD out and noticed it was 60GB, slipped in the new one,
and it formated in about 5 minutes, Windows Pro SP3 disk used to test with,
installed without issue. Going to see if I can recover any data from the
OEM HDD using my USB to SATA converter cable. If all is well, will have to
buy a new HDD and have this laptop back in operation. Don't know if the HDD
just quit, got dropped or???
