My Dell Dimentions 2400, XP, SP3 is able to read CD and DVD-R disks but is
not able to read DVD+R disks.

Is their a solution for this problem other than buying a new disk drive. Am
new to the DVD field and my knowledge base is not too great.

What is the drive make/model?

(Use Belarc Advisor - free - to determine the optical drive make/model and
report it here.)

Do you have a burning need to read DVD+R? If you are writing your own disks
just buy DVD-R.

Yes, there are DVD drives which can read/write to DVD-R but cannot
read/write to DVD+R. And some Dell machines have such drives (my Dimension
4600 for ex.). It may be that Dell or the maker of the device has a patch
for this problem.

Your best approach would be to use only DVD-R disks.

Locate and download Nero Infotool. This tool should tell you what
medias the DVD drive can use. At first "glance" it seems that your
drive is an older model that can only use DVD+ medias and not the DVD-
medias. There is no "software" patch nor a firmware update to allow
the DVD- medias.

Are you burning your own DVDs and have a large supply of DVD+R media that
you don't want to toss?

There are utilities around that will change the "booktype" of your media to
fool readers into thinking that your +R disk is really a -R. I have one
from LiteOn, but it may only work on LiteOn drives.
