Norton 360 problem with XP

J

JeanPaulo

Flightless Bird
I have a weird problem with XP and Norton 360. Of course Norton denies
anything to do with it !

First, when the system shuts down, There are processes that refuses to
go away. As they are ccsvchst, my guess is that they are Norton's

Second, every 5 or so reboot, I get weird 'Disk Errors', practically
every time in a Norton file (Lightningsand.cfd).

Seagate told me that my disc unit was failing...; But I changed the
disc, rebuild XP, and compressed everything... Problem still there,
in the 'documents and setting' area...

Any idea ?
(Get rid of Norton is the usual response. I am considering it!!)

So the obvious is to get rid of a program I paid for ? Very
constructive !

You are quite of the 'I hate Norton anyway group' Aren't you ?

I am no fan of Norton either as it has caused many a problem. Actually
getting rid of it isn't as easy as it sounds but a worthwhile exercise.

Be warned that if you don't eradicate it properly, you can end up with a PC
that won't boot.

Flightless Bird
Simply uninstall Norton, use the tool on their site to completely remove,
then test the PC to see if the problem has dissapeared, if it has then
either leave Norton alone or reinstall Norton and test again

Since Norton is obviously giving you problems, it is obvious you have
two choices if you wish to resolve this particular issue:

1. Post to a Norton users group. Perhaps someone there can pinpoint what
you need to do to fix your problem.

2. Uninstall Norton 360 (which you say you are already considering).
Although there are reports that other Norton products are better
behaved, Norton 360 is certainly one of their worst offerings. I
understand this is not a free program, and you may feel you will have
wasted your money if you uninstall it. But that is your only other
choice nonetheless if you wish to solve this particular problem. If you
decide to uninstall Norton 360 (and I would imagine practically
everybody here will advise you to do this), it is imperative that you
run their removal tool since the regular uninstallation routine is not
very thorough and the leftover remnants will likely be problematic:

Good luck either way.

A little Googling of ccsvchst reveals some possibilities. I don't use
Norton, but there are certainly lots of hits for you to read and see
which one(s) apply to your situation. Since I don't use Norton, I
can't investigate further.

Read through the bickering, looks like maybe something to do with a
configuration involving a floppy drive?

And a potential fix from Norton who do not seem to be denying it:

I don't know about your particular problem with Norton files but why have
you compressed everything?

It can really slow down a system.

Not always. With some datasets, it's faster to decompress at RAM speed than
to fetch all the stuff.

Consider a data file containing one million "empty" (filled with blanks)
records, each of 1000 bytes.

Uncompressed, this file would be, oh, a gigabyte or so and take several
seconds to load.

Compressed, it might be 38 bytes.

Of course this condition is usually quite rare and your overall observation
is correct.

Especially since terabyte drives are now found in the bottom of Cracker Jack
boxes.

They are likely right if you mean they deny that Norton is behind the
problem.
If you'll take the time to look around there are actually some fixes for
issues that may come up.

Did all this start right after installing Norton? If so, uninstall it and
see if they go away. If it happened a week or so after installing, it's not
likley to be Norton as much as it is malware of some sort. But if
uninstalling Norton fixes the problem, you've at least narrowed it down to
one particular area.

Did you turn OFF any previous file protection before installing it? If
not, try installing with those things turned off. I'd include DEP if it's
turned on.

Does Event Viewer give any hints as to what causes the problem? It's very
likely it does and the preceding info or warning entry likely will identify
where the problem arose.

--------------
Symantec Event Manager Service - CCSVCHST.EXE

Ccsvchst.exe will appear in your c:/Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
Shared\ folder. It is the Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr) service. This
file installs with Norton Antivirus, Norton Personal Firewall, and Norton
Internet Security version 2003 or later. ccEvtMgr stands for "Common Client
Event Manager". It logs all activity including virus alerts, application
activities and errors to a log file. Please do not remove this file. It is
needed for these programs to work properly.

In Norton Internet Security, this file can be viewed by picking Options then
Internet Security then "Log Viewer".

In Norton AntiVirus the log can be viewed from the main control panel by
clicking Reports, then Activity Log, then View Report.

Safe

Did you look at the Activity Log for hints?

* That does not appear to be a Norton file!* In fact, most hits I found on
it are that it's a Trojan and in others it is an unknown. Enter
Lightningsand.cfd in a Google search to see what I'm talking about;
there are many, many hits there and a couple that sound like the same
problem you have.
It looks like you might have stumbled onto part of the culprit! It doesn't
look like it is THE malware per sae, so deleting it may just recreate it, or
possibly screw up your machine. I'd read thru the Google hits first and see
what you can figure out.
It's possible that uninstalling Norton might get rid of your issues,
though, if the malware is located in that folder so I'd try that. And then
re-install it and see what happens.
Does the file Lightningsand.cfd come back somewhere else on the disk? Do
a thorough search of the whole disk because in the search its location was
listed in several different folders.
Do the problems go away?

From what I saw, it's not a disk problem although some of the unanswered
questions were about failing disks. Personally I don't think it's the disk.

How easy to do that for a problem that happens once a week or less. If
I do it, I must install another firewall and Antivrus, and let it run
that way for a month.

By the way, that was 'Norton' solution for the problem, which I
rejected.

Thanks for this very constructive suggestion. The story of the problem

was related to Roxio Creator (grab..) 6 being installed.

Since that, I changed my system disk, and re-installed completely
Windows XP Pro on a different unit (not another partition). I was
unable to install on a new Sata unit, because XP just refused to go
there!

I have checked a lot of ccsvchst and LighningSand.cfd entries on the
web, but none are close to what I have.

I ran Highjackthis, Adaware (not in conflict with Norton) and Spybot,
none of those detecting any bug...

What is DEP ?

And NO, the log does not show anything besides the Disk Error
whicj always happen AFTER a shutdown and reboot.

As for the LightningSand.cfd, it IS a Norton file, as much as I could
deduce from different sources

Well, just now I changed some options in Norton, and the file does not
seem to be there anymore... (I disabled Zip checks, and removable
media)

Let's hope it will be OK

It's hated by many for two very good reasons (and may be more):

1. It's no better at virus detection than AVG or Avast or Comodo, and
they are all free.

2. Unlike some of the free ones, it uses bucket-loads of RAM and slows
Windows down.

3. Comodo makes a Security Suite (av + firewall) that's free and uses
only a fraction of the RAM that Norton 360 uses.

Why do you even ask for help when you so steadfastly refuse to accept it?

You are a person who seems to either enjoy having optional problems, or else
a troll.
