no mouse after screensaver

Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't get the system to come put of the
screensaver mode by moving/clicking the mouse. It does come out with clicking
the spacebar on the keyboard.

The mouse is an old PS2, ball mouse, using the microsoft drivers.

The system is set to awake with the mouse or the keyboard. However, since
it hasn't gone to sleep (only into screensaver mode) I don't think this is
the problem.

If, by moving the mouse, I do get the system to come out of screensaver, the
mouse cursor is on the screen but there is no control.

On the keyboard, I can use the tab key to change the focus so I can turn the
system off. The only other keys that work, besides the space bar & tab key
(tab shift) is the "windows" key.

Any ideas on how to get the mouse to work? And get a system return from the
screensaver? Oh, I substituted a laser mouse for the old mouse, but the
problem is the same.

well, if the mouse freezes up
then it is likely that windows
has also freezed up as well.

perhaps, you are low in memory.

as an experiment you might
try unplugging the mouse and
reconnecting it when windows
freezes.

this event would provide a
clue.

another option to test is to
disconnect the mouse during
the screensaver and see if
you have control via the
keyboard.
