no ethernet, audio and video controller in device manager

i successfully deleted a number of trojans and malware using malwarebytes
(and i run xp home ed, sp2). but upon reboot, i no longer have an internet
connection - and my media player has no audio - even tho i can see that it is
playing properly. i did a restore to previous config, but that did nothing.
looking in my device mgr, i see that under 'other devices,' the ethernet,
audio and video controllers all are marked with a yellow "!." i pinged using
cmd and verified that i definitely have an active dsl connection. i did a
triple uninstall for the 3 controllers, and upon reboot, i got the wizard
that asked to install the drivers, but upon doing so, i got the unable to
find driver for each one and the yellow "!" returned. my virus protection
mcafee indicated that i have no viruses, etc, and upon re-running
malwarebytes, it indicated the same. so, WTF!!?? i am thinking something in
my registry needs to be modified, but not sure. any helpful suggestions will
be greatly rewarded by the most positive karma possible. thanks!

Did you physically detach the devices from the computer? ie:
Network Card, DSL Modem etc.

It's not your registry, it's your motherboard drivers, I assume the devices
you mentioned are built in to the motherboard, therefore they need the
drivers reinstalled. I assume you have a cd that should contain the drivers,
else you will have to id the brand and model of your Motherboard and visit
their website to download the drivers needed.

You need to reinstall the motherboard and chipset drivers. You should
have a driver disc; if not, determine the make and model of your PC or
motherboard and go to the manufacturer's site and download the appropriate
drivers (using another system). After you install the drivers, these
devices should work again.

Have a look here:

Keep in mind that in certain situations, if a PC is too compromised, a
Clean Install is warranted.

rb,

i did dis/reconnect the modem (seamens 4100), but to no avail. i also turned
it off for 30 secs and then back on. i also reset the little bugger. nothing.
it seems the problem lies in the fact that my computer does not recognize the
modem/driver. supposedly, the driver comes as a part of the os, thereby
theoretically reinstalling after reboot. but my system says that it can find
no driver. what else can you tell me?

hey p,

thanks for your suggestion. you are the 2nd person to suggest this option.
but i am concerned that this will negatively affect my data files. can i
access the specific drivers and install only those? what could have caused
such a sucky thing to happen?

Very likely caused by the "number of trojans and malware."

daave,

thanks for this info - i have 'code 28.'
i followed thru with all the procedures, short of the repair/re-install of
the os. i don't think i will be able to 'repair' as an option bec my os came
with my computer (as opposed to a retail installed version of xp. in any
event, it is hard for me to understand how this whole thing could have
happened. i did a complete reinstall of my os 2 weeks ago and everyhting was
fine - still is - except for this connectivity issue.

rb,

not only did i disconnect the modem, but i reset it as well. i also turned
it off and back on after 30 secs (as recommended elsewhere). still not
connecting. do you have any other suggesting having nothing to do with a
system re-install? thanks!

Do you mean the procedures listed here?:

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/code-28-error.htm

The Repair Install is only mentioned if the five options above yield no
benefit. You did reboot, correct? Also, I noticed you are running SP2
instead of SP3; this could be one of your problems, too.

Do all three devices yield the Code 28?

Do you have the drivers for these hardware components? (Often, PCs are
sold with disks that contain all the drivers of the PC's components.) If
not, you should be able to download them from either the PC
manufacturer's Web site or the particular hardware manufacturer's Web
site. If you provide us names, models, and model numbers, we can guide
you if you're stuck.

One thing that puzzles me, though:

If there is no Ethernet driver installed, you should not be able to
successfully ping if you are using DSL. Is it possible your DSL modem is
connected by USB? If so, that would explain what is happening
(partially).

I would get those drivers and install them. But like I said before, if
your PC had all those infections, sometimes the wisest course of action
is a Clean Install.

And finally, what exactly did you mean by the phrase "did a restore to a
previous config"?

You should be able to visit Dell's website and enter your model of computer
and download the necessary drivers for your devices, have you spoken with
Dell yet?

yes, I understand your reluctance to use the factory restore disc's, I
wouldn't use them either, I would however tell you this is a classis example
of a need for recent backups of not only data but drivers and system files as
well, ie Acronis True Image.

You need to use a clean, working PC to download all the necesary drivers
(unless you already have them on a disk).

What is the make and model of your PC? Do you have a flash drive? If not
you should really get one; they're quite inexpensive and handy! This is
one example:

daave,

yes - i did mean the proceedures at pcsupport.

what i meant from the 'config' comment i made was that i performed a restore
point - to no effect.

as for the resultant codes for the other 2 devices, they also give a code 28.

my modem is not usb, but rather a ethernet cable. regarding the ping though,
it does ping correctly - there just seems to be a disconnect between by
device mgr and my ethernet controller - which i guess also includes my
ability to NOT hear/see any audio and video.

my motherboard is a MSI RS480M2/RX480M2 series. mainboard model MS7093
(v1.X) M-ATX, ATI RS480, RX 480 chipset based - all designed for an AMD Athon
64 (socket 939) processor. thats all i can say at the moment.

your further comments are enlightening - thanks!

hey daave,

thanks so much for that link.
i have downloaded my corresponding driver(s), as well as some useful
utilities.

this has all been a nice (and frustrating) tutorial experience and i really
appreciate your help (along with the other contributors). there is a huge
learning curve to a computer and you guys have made it somewhat easier. i
have yet to install anything, but i anticipate that doing so will resolve
everything. in the event that it does, happy new year and thanks again. ~k

just to let you know, i got my issue resolved by a winsock fix that
changed/corrected some registry entries. a link was sent via another
troubleshooter.

but thanks for your suggestion.
