So Microsoft is going to close down this group. I have setup their NNTP
program and downloaded the groups. This group does not show up. Can
somebody tell me where I can go try and figure out exactly what the hell
Microsoft is up to?

It looks like you have to use two versions of NNTP to cover all the forums.
The Answers version and the Forum version. Answers uses port 120 and Forums
uses port 119.

What groups?

To access TechNet, MSDN, and Expression web-forums via your newsreader,
you'll need one version of NNTP Bridge installed (i.e., MS Forums NNTP
Bridge).

To access Answers web-forums via your newsreader, you'll need another
version of NNTP Bridge installed (i.e., MS Answers NNTP Bridge).

You cannot (nor do you need to) access this or other MS newsgroups via NNTP
Bridge.

FWIW I found it a PITA to have the two bridges on different ports, reader
setup wise.

You can change the answers bridge to port 119 (there is a
sumthinorother.config.exe file in the bridges installation folder you can
edit with Notepad) and it works fine.

I had actually downloaded at some point both versions and had them on my
computer so everything is worked out. Thanks for your response.

I got the NNTP bridge programs installed on my Windows XP Pro computer
without major problems. I am now trying to install them on my Windows 7 Pro
computer and I am getting the following error:

Error: Setup has detected that the file
'C:/Users\BILL-S~1\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD7E45.tmp\DotNetFx35Client\DotNetFx35ClientSetup.exe'
has changed since it was initially published.

Hopefully there is some place I can turn for help.

Support for NNTP Bridge is only available via the Connect private newsgroup;
see https://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums

Tip: See http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/

The successful help was to forget setup.exe and just run the msi program.
Everything is working now.

Hi Bill,

Since you have both NNTP Bridge Applications installed and working properly,
perhaps you can offer me some insight on a problem I'm having with "MS
Answers NNTP Bridge".

I've successfully installed the "MS Forums NNTP Bridge" Application and it's
working as billed. However, when I install the "MS Answers NNTP Bridge" and
try to log on to the server I'm confronted with the following Error message:

"In order to use the Microsoft Answers NNTP Bridge you must first log into
forums and enable the "Use NNTP Bridge" option in the "My Settings" page.
Be sure to use the same live ID login that you use for the NNTP Bridge
Application."

I guess my question to you would be, is there more than one place you must
have "Use NNTP Bridge" checked in order to get the Answers NNTP Bridge to
work?

Don

I believe you do have go to answers and check use NNTP. Go to the
following site, login, and check under My Settings to make sure use NNTP is
checked.

Jochen Kalmbach, an MVP, developed an NNTP bridge for the MSDN Forums
(as an alternative to Microsoft's bridge):

The early reviews are good.

Thanks Bill,

I've already been to that site, problem is I don't get any "Settings" link
on that page. I've tried signing in and signing out on that page but still
no Settings link.

Hi Bill,

Got it resovled. I was going to that site using IE6 and the page was not
displaying the settings links. Once I visited the site using IE8 I was able
to get the My Settings link and tick the "Use NTTP Bridge". Now the Answers
Bridge is working on all machines on my Home Network.

Thanks again,

I have it working fine on my Windows 7 Pro computer but not on my Windows XP
Pro SP3 computer. I have to figure out what I am doing wrong on the XP
computer. What I like is it saves you from having to run 2 programs and all
of the forums are in one place. I wonder why Microsoft did not do this?
