Hello PABear
Thank you for the warning and all your help over the last 10 years.

Perhaps we may meet in 'the next life'.
My IP/ISP has done the same recently - used the excuse that the forums were
more popular - and the only reason for that was, when searching for help on
their web site, they always directed you to the discussion/forums and never
to newsgroups. Bit like MS. - and they tried to say that users found it
easier to use the forums - but those directed to the newsgroups were most
grateful.

I am replying to the post from Newsgroup:
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

Microsoft DOES NOT control the "microsoft.public." Newsgroups.

The only way these Newsgroups will go away is if EVERY Usenet provider
dropped them from their NNTP Server, which ain't going to happen.

Now it IS true that Microsoft can drop any Newsgroup is wants from
their www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/.

Also note Google Groups listing:
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?lnk=srgmt&hl=en&q=microsoft.public

And most of the posts to the microsoft.public newsgroups come from the
Microsoft Communties web interface and people posting direct to the
msnews.microsoft.com servers, both of which will cease over the coming
months - the IE one today. So yes, cheer that the groups will live on, but
lament that the number of posts will plummet to a tiny fraction of their
current rate, the groups will die anyway.

You are correct, Jeff. Thanks for confirming the appropriate apostrophe
usage.

Anybody with a NNTP client, such as Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows
Live Mail, etc., that can get to a newsgroup will still be able to post to
the newsgroups listed in this thread. The groups are not going away, just
MSoft's link to them is leaving us.

To the extent that MSoft Communities is the entry portal for most posts,
then the traffic will surely drop off when the portals close.

Personally, I find any trip to Microsoft.com is so laden with frustration
and dissatisfaction that I never go to there unless I absolutely have to,
and then I only remain for the time it takes for the particular task. I find
that everything that MSoft does is pretty much a disaster, and nothing good
comes from my ventures into their realm.

I (and I'd wonder if more are like me) found this group because of the
frustration of getting any useful information from MSoft Communities. I used
my news client to search for the group I needed when I was having whatever
the problem was that I was having. Now, I return to help when I can.

Try these Newsgroup Servers: aioe.org and msnews.microsoft.com. I can still
access microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general and
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop on the 2nd server and
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop on the first (aioe.org)

I use Cox and their news.west.cox.net Newsgroup server just went dead today.
I went to their chat room and was advised that 30 June, 2010 was the end of
their providing Newsgroup service.

Thank you for your help over the years - so will you continue in another
form of NNTP?

"its", the possessive adjective and possessive pronoun form of the personal
pronoun "it" -
"it's" a contraction of it is or it has.

Adieu also to all.

Antioch
Just thought - today is 'chop it day' - still going??????

Thanks for the aioe.org suggestion. I've subscribed to the MS NGs via
that server but am not sure how long that will be worthwhile, Panic.

Asi es la vida ... long live NNTP !

Why suggest msnews.microsoft.com? That's the server cluster at MS that is
being shut down! :p

You can still access stuff on msnews.microsoft.com because MS haven't
cleared them all down yet, looks like the office monkey forgot to delete the
IE newsgroups last night ...

I expect that there are more people like you. We'll see as time goes by
how much traffic stays here.
