New file management software

Hello:

Over the years Windows Explorer has been a great file management software
for me.
But there are some important features that are missing.

* Can anyone recommend a great file management software with more
features ?

Thanks.

What features do you think are missing?

Answer the question above and maybe I or someone else can make a
suggestion for you.

I don't know about the OP, but I always thought that "Select All" in the
context menu (right-click) could be useful.

Folks:

* I should be able to determine the size of a folder without having to go
into that folder.
* I would like to be able to color various folders.
* Plus other general additional features associated with high-level file
management software

Any application needs to be upgraded constantly over time. Windows explorer
is rather old and is largely unchanged in terms of general capabilities.
Hope this helps.

Thanks.

That shows in the Tooltip when you hover over the folder.

Total Commander (ghisler.com) Although you'll have to cheat a little to
add different colors to your folders.

Stable. Flexible. Powerful.
Free updates _forever_. I've used it for 10 years and a half-dozen
major updates. Near instant support from the TC community
(http://ghisler.ch/board/) and the actual guy who writes the code drops
in a couple of times a week.

Yeah. We're all that enthusiastic.

I forgot to mention that you can download a 100% functional version to
use as long as you want, with a splash entry screen.

Standard configuration operates like the old Norton Commander but you
can customize it easily to work with Windows compliant keys/mouse actions.

OK, but pressing Ctrl-A selects all, and is very easy to do. I's
rather do that than have to click on something.

Not necessarely, it depends of the "context".

And it wouldn't hurt CTRL-A if "Select All" was also in the context menu.

I already know about CTRL-A, I am just saying that "right-click|Select
All" could be useful... sometimes. ;)

Does Xyplorer support Windows 7 64-bit? (I'm looking to replace my
PowerDesk Pro 7 that is 32-bit only; it freezes my Windows 7)

Yes, it does. XYplorer itself is 32-bit, but Windows 7 64-bit of course
supports 32-bit applications. BTW, you can try XYplorer 30 days for free.
Since it is portable you can easily and completely remove it by simply
deleting the files if you eventually don't like it.

That is /major/ understatement.

Windows Explorer is NOT a file manager. It is a torture device
whose primary function is to prevent a new computer user from
understanding the basic principles of file and directory
organization, to keep him/her as ignorant as possible, and to
allow only the most basic of functions, the execution of which
is designed to be as troublesome as possible.

> * Can anyone recommend a great file management software

Total Commander, www.ghisler.com, works free forever, just press
one of three buttons, but it DESERVES to be paid for. It is THE
best, but takes some brains and time to set up the way you like
it. Well worth the effort though. EVERYTHING is totally
customizable.

www.freecommander.com is a free rewrite by some guy with too
much time on his hands with possibly (I haven't tried it, I own
a copy of TC) some features missing but it will still blow that
shit WE out of the universe.

Don't waste your time on all the "additional shells" that still
use the basic WE "engine" or on other stuff like Altap
Salamander etc.

TC is the one, period. When you see what it can do you will have
to wash your underwear. And there are MANY additional plugins
available which can make it do everything from burning discs to
supporting virtual CD's on your HD. Etc etc etc.

Nonsense.

If he is so ignorant he can't use Windows Explorer, he doesn't deserve to
use a computer.

Total Commander is more bloatware. I suppose you liked Norton Commander?
