Network problem

S

Sunny

Flightless Bird
My LAN (Workgroup) has been Working OK for years
Now when trying to access the Network through Windows Explorer I get :
"Not accessible, you might not have permission to use the network
resource"
"Not enough server storage to process this request"
(This message pops up on any PC/Laptop that I try to access the workgroup
from)

The "network locations" column shows my PC as "LAN, but the others as
"Internet"

The only thing I can think may have stuffed things was an attempt to
access a mobile phone using Bluetooth that I abandoned when it didn't
work. (Since uninstalled)

ISP access is via a Cable Modem :
Two PCs are WinXP Sp3, another is Win96SE (connected to a router via
Ethernet cable).
Two laptops are Win7 Home (connected to the router via wifi)

Listed "protocols" :-
LAN "profiles" (Properties button avail) yes/no
Client for Microsoft Networks yes
Server Advertising protocol NO
Symantec Network filter driver NO
File and Printer Sharing NO
QoS Packet scheduler NO
NW Link NETBIOS NO
NW Link IPX/SPX Netbios NO
Net BEUI Protocol NO
Internet Protocol Yes

Ran the Network connection wizard, no change.

All the protocols are listed as "ticked" but it is strange that their
"properties are unavailable?

All the PCs/Laptops are accessing internet/mail etc through the router OK,
so I am loath to fiddle with stuff I know nothing about.

Any suggestion of where to start?
(For now I am using a USB stick to transfer files)

Probably caused by Norton/Symantec product. Try increasing the IRP
stack size:

I get the same error. I can attribute it to Acronis True Image. They're
working the problem now with no solution as of yet. BTW, I've increased the
IRPStackSize to 50.

I'm intested if there's another solution to this.

Oh Oh, I have updated True Image to Ver 2010, and now I think about it, My
PC had a hissy fit when trying to set an Incremental backup. (Showed the
estimated time to complete as "400 months" so I quit the attempt)

I will try the "Increase IRP Stack" as well.

Strange that all the "protocols" were sabotaged as well. :)

First snag (increase IRP stack)

"You can increase the IRPStackSize value. You must first add this value to
the following key if it is not already present:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

Value Name: IRPStackSize
Data Type: DWORD
Default: 0x4
Maximum: 0xC

Snag, there is no entry "IRPStackSize" , all I have is :
Default - REG_SZ (value not set)
AdjustNullSessionPipes
autodisconnect
CachedOpenLimit
DisableDOS
enableforcedlogoff
Guid
Lmannounce
NullSessionPipes
NullSessionShares
requiresecuritysignature
ServiceDll
Size
srvcomment

Right click options are
Key
String value
Binary value
Dword value
Multi string value
Expandable String Value

Where do I begin, in order to add "IRPStackSize" ?

Add the value as describe in the article. Note that on Windows XP the
default IRPStackSize value is 15, see here for a newer more up to date
article:

Description of the IRPStackSize parameter in Windows 2000, in Windows
XP, and in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285089

Also note that the problem is not on the computer receiving the error
but that it is on the 'server' being accessed by the client, as
described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/198386 . The
IRPStackSize needs to be changed on the 'server' not the client.

As this is happening when you try to browse the network I would think
that the problem is on the machine which has the Master Browser role,
try changing or adding the value on that machine. Also look in the
Event Log for additional clues.

Thanks John, I modified the value to 32 (50) by increments with no joy.
May have to wait for Acronis for a fix, or uninstall Acronis 2010.
Pity is that I "upgraded two WinXP comps, to Ver 2010, and the two
Netbooks (Win7) to Ver 2010 for Netbooks.
(May have to revert to an earlier version) :)

If and when I get an answer from Acronis, I will provide it.
