A PC came my way, takes ages to start up. Like you do the control-alt-del and it takes 25 seconds for the logon window to appear. Then slow slow slow. If I try to start task manager, that takes about 20 sec to appear, and it shows only a few percent CPU being used. Weird: what is it waiting for? Godot? Then to shut down takes about 6 minutes. Now this PC is P4 2.8 GHz with 1536 MB of DDR and 7200 RPM disk. I once installed XP on a PC with 500 MHz CPU and 384 MB of SDRAM, and that was faster. This tortoise was an office PC, has only an accounting package and anti-virus scanner, not tons of crap like I often see. I booted a live linux CD, and then it runs quite briskly. I tried various diagnostics, anti-spyware scan, defrag the disk and so on. Is there some obscure bug which chokes XP thus?
