my connection keeps dropping

Hi

My internet connection to the DNS server keeps dropping all the time. My ISP
has said they cant see anything wrong at their end. Is there an simple
application that can monitor and log the times when my connection is dropped
so that I can present the evidence to my ISP?

Thanks

Are you using a router? If so, the router may maintain logs of
all activity.

Try restarting your router.
What make and type is it?

please dont ask me to restart/ reboot /reconfigure - i just want a simple
app to monitor my connection and record and log when connection drops.

Thanks

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) as well as your IE version
when posting in an IE-specific forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next
reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Restarting the ADSL router is the first step in diagnosing where the problem
is. For instance, all 3 Netgear ADSL routers I've had so far has had issues
with it's DNS proxy server, so if your PC is set to use the router for DNS
requests that might explain why you get DNS problems. Reconfigure your PC to
use your ISPs DNS servers and see if that helps.

I have XP SP3 ; IE8

Whilst I truly appreciate all your comments - there is nothing wrong with my
set up. All that I am requesting is a simple application that can monitor my
internet connection and log and record any drop outs over time.

Please no more suggestions on restarting/reconfiguring modems/ firewall /
antivirus programs .

Thanks

When you are so expletive about what you want, why do you post it
in the Internet Explorer newsgroup?

After all, Internet Explorer has absolutely nothing to do with your
question.

So instead of finding the source of the problem you just want to spend
days/weeks collating data that will show that your line drops out?

In which case just download any of the millions of bandwidth monitoring apps
that are available and set your system downloading continuously (eg use a
torrent client with settings to restrict bandwidth down to dialup levels or
lower and then queue up a load of Linux distro downloads such that it will
take weeks to download it all at slow speeds, and then leave it all running
logging the bw use). Just search Google for XP bandwidth monitoring and pick
one.

Or the speedier alternative would be too provide your ADSL router make,
model, and firmware version and I'd almost put money on there being a known
problem that is resolved with changing the DNS settings.

I assume that your all encompassing knowledge that there is nothing wrong in
your setup also means that you checked that all your phone sockets are
filtered too?

How about bellwire interference? Are you running one of the new BT
faceplates that effectively disconnects the bellwire, or have you
disconnected it yourself?

When you get drop outs do you check the router status page to ensure it's
fully sync'd? You might have signal sync, but without the login auth being
completed too then you've got no connection.

Every problem I've had with ADSL drop outs has been down to

(a) split insulation on phone line from roof to master socket, which was
replaced free of charge by BT

(b) faulty filter supplied with first ISP, any time someone tried ringing my
phone the ADSL cut out

(c) Netgear routers - they all appear to have DNS proxy issues, which show
up quicker the more connections you put through it (simple enough to cause
this using torrent downloading for example)

(d) bell wire interference - UK phones don't use the bellwire any more, but
anytime your phone rings there's a voltage supplied down that wire that can
interfere with the signal especially if you phone extension cable fitted
poorly

(e) ADSL ports maxed out at local exchange - if your exchange is
oversubscribed, then it's possible that you're losing sync and then unable
to reconnect due to no more ports available, but in this case it's obvious
from the router status because it won't sync.

and in all these cases, the ISP can do nothing to fix them remotely, and
providing them with data showing the dropouts will be of no use because they
have no way to reconcile local issues with their systems.

I just wrote a lengthy reply, and only when I hit send did I suddenly think
"damn, I forgot to point out that this is entirely the wrong group too as
it's a networking issue, not IE". :)

Did I say that anything was wrong with your set up? No.

Is it possible that one or more of your security-related applications or the
overall security of your system has something to do with your dropped
connections? Certainly.

The next time it happens check Event Viewer. There may be an entry under
System events.

You might want to take your own advice. If you're just going to throw
tantrums because you don't get the answer you want, why bother asking? And
given that I think I'm the only person in the UK who replied to you (the
others seem to have posted from IPs outside the UK), I can only assume you
decided that I'm a tosser and/or cretin - that's ok, it's certainly more
than I think of you now you've posted this, my 5 year old son could have
posted in a more mature manner.

Now go annoy somebody in a networking group - preferably not on the MS
server, because as you seem to believe this is the fault of your ISP it
therefore has nothing to do with Microsoft products.
