mvps.org Restricted Site problem

P

pqt2

Flightless Bird
WinXP/SP3/IE8

For some reason when I go to some pages of the MVPS.ORG stie (HostFile
page specifically, but also others) the task bar displays "Restricted Site"
and IE8 will not let me download the host file.

The Restricted Site list (tools/internet options/security tab) has no
entry for mvps.org that I can find but the Trusted Site list has the mvps
host file page specifically listed.

Can any one give me a means to correct this problem.

P.S. I've made no entries into either site, AdAware and SpyBot must have
made all entries. Thanks.

Hi p,

You can post on the thread you started. We will see when you append a
post... but since you started this new one, continue here.

If mvps.org is in your Restricted sites zone then either

There is an entry in your registry for it. Search the registry for mvps
or
There is an entry in your hosts file for *.mvps.org that maps to another
site that is already in your restricted sites zone. (hidden from users in
the HKLM node)

mmm. You will also need to know the IP address of mvps.org and also search
for it in both your Registry and Hosts file.

Start>Run>cmd

ping www.mvps.org

209.68.48.119

You may also like to inspect your Windows startup (Start>Run>msconfig -
startup tab) for anything suspicious that may be re-writing your hosts file
or altering the registry.

Regards.

Why did you begin a new thread?

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Also available via...

Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

It is not listed in the Restricted Site list and I have added it to the
Trusted Site list but the task bar continues to display "Restricted Site"
anyway.

Not sure how to go about doing this.

Could not find any entry in the host file. My host file is the most current
mvps.org host file.

Not sure what ping means but I did the start>run>cmd and entered
www.mvps.org a the prompt and got responce that it was not a valid command,
or something to that effect.

Found nothing suspicious in misconfig/startup.

Thanks for your help, but I'm still at a loss.

Hi p.

The 209.68.48.119 is the IP address of mvps.org.

When you type in a web address (mvps.org) in your browser it is converted to
an IP Address (209.68.48.119) (behind the scenes, a thing called a dns
lookup) which is machine readable and is used by the routers (your ISP,
Satellite up and downlinks and phone and fibre networks) to find the web
page you want on a server in some distant building somewhere in the world.
You can even find out which rack on which floor in a building the server is
located at from this IP address.

What I am say is that as well as looking for the 'mvps.org' address in your
Registry and Hosts file, you should also search for the IP Address
(209.68.48.119) as well, because either 'mvps.org' or 209.68.48.119 could be
used as the address of the site in your Registry or Hosts file.

Robears suggestion to do a Malware scan is probably the best advice as the
scan will essentially do the same searches (above) for you and may also find
anything in your Windows Startup list that may be hijacking your settings
and changing them back in your Registry or Hosts file

Regards.

I did look for both in my host file(mvps host file) with negative
results. I have absolutely no idea where to start looking for them in the
registry.

I ran the MSRT and MS Live scans with negative results.
Is there some other online scan that I missed and should have run?

New question. I typed the IP address into IE8 and no "Restricted Site" was
displayed on the home page but when I used Google and clicked mvps.org home
page link IE8 displayed "Restricted Site" in the task bar. Does this shed
any further light on my problem?

Have you checked the machine wide Restricted Sites zone? When you run IE and
look at the zones you are seeing only your local account listings. If
malware, or your system admin (in the case of a corporate PC) has added
mvps.org into the machine wide Restricted Sites zone you won't see it in the
IE settings, but it will still be applied by IE.

I'm not sure if this still applies to IE8, but the following article
describes the location of the registry entries up to IE7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569

You would need to look under the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings key

Also check the "Security Zones: Use only machine settings" Group Policy
setting.

Some malware will change these settings if they have been able to run with
sufficient permissions (eg you run infected code under an Administrator
level account) in order to try to prevent you from visiting known sites
about malware blocking and removal in order to make it harder for you to
remove them.
