I just recently realized that when you play an .mp3 file with Windows 7 (I use
Winamp but it still shows up) or even just highlight a music fle in a folder
along the bottom of the screen is a bar with information about the song. Some
of then ones I have show no artist or album, but if I click on the box that says
Contributing Artist it opens up and looks like I can make an entry. But try as I
may, I can't make an entry. The text in the box stays there, I can't delete it
and make changes. Should I be able to do this and if so, how? Windows 7
Professional 64 bit. Thanks.

Does your user have permission to change anything in the file? If you
right-click on the mp3 and pick Properties, Details tab, are you able to
change anything and save it there?

Okay, that works (I have administrator permission). But it just looks like you
shoulw be able to do something with the bar across the bottom of the screen.
Thanks.

You're welcome. I agree- I tried on mine (Home Premium 32-bit) and it works
on the bottom bar. Don't know what would lock that, though, and not the
properties.

It's ID3 tags hidden in the file. You will need som software able to
handle musik-files
to edit the information I think, and will be able to find free software.
Search "edit ID3" or metadata.
Easy CD-DA Extractor will do most You want to do with musicfiles.

Thanks. I have Mp3tag which I've used for years. It's just that this is a new
feature with Windows 7 and I don't see why I can't just do it by clicking on a
file name and seeing and editing the info at the bottom of the screen. It lets
me see what appears to be a box I can type in but I can't type in it.

I can type into the box and it will save any changes so you should be able to as well.
Have you tried double-clicking the box to select the text ?
Mine goes blue (or sometimes black). I can then edit the text and Save any changes.

Thanks for the replies. Now, all of a sudden, it works fine.

Yes it is. And it's nice to actually get useful answers. Too many oof these
groups get one or two answers or decent replies and then two dozen idiots, who
obviously know absolutely nothing, making smart comments and flaming others.
