I've been using MSE and the Windows XP firewall for several months now.
Program seems less intrusive than my previous a/v program, AVG Free. No
problems so far.

I was given a challenge in another news group. It basically concerned the quality of
Symantec.

Thank you for that David. It's the first time I have seen that website, very
interesting. Their results seem to indicate that programs 2 through 4 are
almost equally effective with Avira way out in front. Also a very poor
result from Symantec !

Hmm, those are pretty impressive stats. However, the following caveat caught
my eye:
"
VirusTotal is not substitute any antivirus software installed in a PC, as it
only scans individual files on demand. It does not offer permanent
protection for the user's system either
"
I have to wonder WHY it's like that, but ... it seems to seriously negate
the appeal of the program unless I happen to have stumbled upon a new, so
far unidentified virus?

Then I also came across:
"
There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this
service.
"
While it makes a lot of sense that multiple apps thrown at a problem might
make for a greater detection rate, I fail to see much real use for this
unless I'm checking to see if a virus is known or not, maybe.

There seems to be little need for the average user? I'm sure not going to
be continually sending files through it and reading all that mess to see
what they amounted to.

Am I missing something? I suspect we have a misplaced tool here.
