No, actually, I hadn't. I've just Googled it. 4 Gbit/sec is fast! If they
can achieve 400 MB/sec in real life, that would copy even a large PST file
in a few seconds - if the hard disk itself is up to the job. Over USB 2 I
get about 20-25 MB/sec from a modern Vista or Win 7 PC to a Western Digital
"Passport" drive, so a 3 GB PST file (yes, I *have* seen them that big!)
takes a while to copy.

The next thing you need to know some about are solid state hard drives.
No moving parts, extremely quiet and lightening fast. They're a bit
expensive right now but I'm sure the price will come down soon. See

WLM is much less user-friendly than OE. It does not have the same interface
as OE in that you cannot have _all_ your mail and newsgroups folders visible
in the same folder pane. And by visible I don't just mean that you are able
to see them because they aren't all in faint pastel colours!

And let's say in OE and WLM you have a folder called "John" where you put
mails to and from John. If you want to know where that folder is in OE6,
you just right-click and look at Properties. You can then go straight to
that folder in WE if you wish to copy it. Want to do the same thing in WLM?
Just try. It's about as intuitive as a toothbrush for hens.

replacement that more closely resembled OE. I settled on Thunderbird 2,
but there may be others that more closely match OE than WLM.

Being trying TB. Looks clean - much like OE.

But its "Help" is online, and I don't find it very helpful. It's some of
the odd things I find annoying - like why does today's date in the list of
messages only show the time, and not the date? Can it be changed? If so,
how? I am sure there is something online which explains what can, and can't,
be done with Config Editor. If so, where is it?

I'll carry on with it for a while, but try out other clients along the way.

Click on the icon at the top right of the pane and you will be offered
column headers to add.

Have read several reviews and tests of HDD using USB 3 and they all
say that the 400 MB/sec is smoke and mirrors and the true transfer
rate is about 2 to 3 times USB 2 speeds.

Yes, I know about that icon (although it took me some time to find how to
get new columns when I first used TB!). But it doesn't help my problem - in
fact the column says "date" when it doesn't show messages with today's
date, only the time.

That's just the way TB is. It only shows the time on messages
created/received today. I'm sure there's a way to change that in the
config editor, I just haven't come across it yet. If you want a good
reference to all the entries in the config editor, then take a look at
