Mouse hovering acts like click

Help! Since upgrading to win7, sometimes when I just slide my mouse
pointer over an icon it selects that file or launches a program. I know
this is a 'feature' of Win7, but I want to turn it off.

I've gone into Control Panel--> Ease of Access --> Make the Mouse easier
to use and unselected (actually that was the default) Activate a window
by hovering over it with a mouse, but it still happens. The frustrating
thing is that it's inconsistent, doesn't happen all the time.

Anybody have any ideas? Do I need to change settings in more than what
I've detailed above, or is this maybe a bug?

Thanks

Paul

Try a different mouse? Maybe the mouse is defective.

What type of mouse? If it's the old roller ball type it's probably trash.
If it's a wireless or laser mouse try uninstalling and reinstalling the
drivers.

You mention the taskbar. Yes, it happens when I hover over a taskbar
icon. But it also happens within windows themselves. I have unexpectedly
closed programs (sometimes losing data) if I get near the red X in the
far upper right of certain windows. I've also deleted e-mails in Outlook
2007 by passing the mouse over the X in the command bar at the top.

It's like Windows is ignoring the fact that the 'hover option' is
unchecked in the Ease of Use section.

By the way, it's a one year old HP laptop with a trackpasd and a
Microsoft wireless 6000 mouse. Both pointing devices exhibit the same
behavior, and both worked fine before Win 7. Went into device manager
and tried to update drivers for both, aqnd Windows said drivers for both
were up to date.

Hmm. This reminds me of what happens when one accidentally touches the
touchpad. Some touchpads have a setting to help ignore accidental touches,
and in any case, the sensitivity to touch is probably adjustable.

But I also wonder what would happen if you disabled one of the mice so that
only one is active. Maybe you're experiencing a hardware conflict between
the two devices.

I mean no offense, but by chance do you have Parkinson's, tremors, or
any similar affliction that might cause your finger to twitch
uncontrollably? If so, perhaps you're clicking the mouse and you're
not even aware of it.

An easy test is to observe someone else using the same computer to see
if they notice the same behavior.

Likewise, it reminded me of the old story about the woman who
complained to her company's IT guy that her keyboard was broken. It
was inserting random characters into any document she happened to have
open. They replaced her keyboard, but the problem remained. Finally,
they came out to watch her work and to be there at the exact moment
that the random characters showed up. It turned out that her breasts
were resting on the keyboard whenever she leaned forward.

I don't think that's what's happening here, but it's something to be
aware of. :)

Thanks. I thought of it because I have an extended family member with
that issue. She says her mouse has a mind of its own, but the rest of
us can see what she's doing even if she can't. Even so, she doesn't
believe us. :)
