Mouse Cursor disabled

I am trying to bring up Windoes XP home on my old Compaq 100, which came with
Win 98. It loads, but the mouse cursor is not usable--it jumps erracticly
and does not allow me to click on anything. Also, when I try to bring up the
programs screen, it comes up, but then quickly reverts to a basically blank
screen. Help would be appreciated.
