more and more scripts won't stop runng

Hi!

More and more websites that I visit are displaying a box that says
something like Script won't stop Running. It has two choices, Stop
and Continue. And it gives a long complicated address. Better
description of error message below**.

I have winXP, SP3 with all the updates they've offered me.

And Firefox 3.6.8, the latest version,

and I was offered, dl'd, and installed the latest version of
Flashplayer a couple days ago.

Continue has never acccomplished anything. It rusn for a while longer
and then gives the same box again, maybe with a different address.

Clicking Stop usually works, but sometimes I can't click, can't get
back to Firefox if I go to another program's screen, and sometimees
the browser just freezes. Tonight I can't get back to Firefox.

Websites that do this are www.dictionary.com, which redirects to a
name I can never remember; a couple others; and tonight www.411.com .

I use IE8 only when there is a problem with FF, and IE8 hasn't done
this in the 3 or 4 times I've gone to www.dictionary.com there.

I'm thinking that some part of windows or Flash or Java or JavaScript
needs updating.

**Error Message
Warning, Unrepsonsive Script

? A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped
responding, You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see
if the script will complete.

Script: http://...... [Details of address available!]

Thanks for any help you can give.

What about interference from external sources ?

Firefox Add-Ons, third party tool bars, or AV/malware tools ?

In WinXP, if I go to Start:programs, there are two entries for
Firefox, one of which is labeled "Safe Mode". That one is likely
to be disabling "baggage" added to the browser, by the user.

I would suspect Add-Ons or Tool Bars, before Flash or Java or JavaScript.

You can turn off Java in the preferences. I keep mine turned off, and
can't remember the last time I really needed Java. (There will always be
sites with a heavy Java orientation, like some kids game sites. But I don't
use them.)

Turning off JavaScript is going to cause more web pages to fail to load
and render properly. So disabling that is less likely to be helpful in
the long run.

On some platforms, Firefox ships with NoScript add-on enabled, which
is another solution to disabling scripting. But a lot of sites are
coded, such that they don't render properly or do the right things,
if scripting is turned off. And besides, this isn't the way to solve your
problem. Something you've added to the browser, could be responsible.
