Missing System Tray Icons (Always Show) ..?

A

Andrew

Flightless Bird
Speaker(Volume Control), and other Icons Disappear ..!

XP Home,SP3, all updates.

Even Though, **** Hide inactive icons **** is NOT Checked ..!

I have even done Customize, in Taskbar and StartMenu properties, to
ensure the missing sysTray Programs,
are set to Always Show..! Even Setting to "Hide when Inactive"..
apply, resetting to "Always show" does not
get them back.. I can even see the programs running in Task Manager,
so know they are active.

Is there a Registry Setting or Executable to Re-Initialise the
SystemTray ..? or to can remove then reapply the settings.

Thanx in Advance
Andrew

Do they appear when you double the size of the task bar?

Windows XP Home sp3 all updates, Clean system, using a number of
anti-malware with AVG antivirus.
AMD dual core, 2gigs RAM,Palit Geforce9600gt with 1gig memory video, 2 sata
drives partitioned Disk0 with C,E(extended C),and F.
Disk1 D(music), G(photo), H, I(backups)

I do wonder if E and D are messing with the boot sequence and this is
altering the startup of the icons themselves? Seems to weird for that
though.

Interesting, I have the same issue sometimes. The icons do not show in the
bottom right but they are active in Task Manager. I also notice a slower
boot when they do not show and a fast boot when they do show. It is also
random as to which ones show and which ones don't.
My son thinks it may be the number of partitions I have on the drive or
something to that effect.

I would be interested in any suggestions as well to lead to a resolution.
Not a huge deal just a visual inconvenience.

Re: any MS-MVP got any comments ..?

If you read the link I gave it gives a few suggestions
The easiest that worked for me is to log off and immediately log back on
The other more permanent is to turn off the UPnP icon display - see the link
for exact details

log back on

Re: any MS-MVP got any comments ..?

Yup done that..! Thanx ;-)

So is there an Inherent problem with SysTray service loading to early
in the Login Procedure ..?

For example, a USB stick may not get plugged in until later, but the
USB Hotplug never appears..!
I have to use ( %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe
shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll ) Shortcut
to make sure USB devices are safely stopped/unplugged.

Is there such (Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll) for the system tray ..?

Thanx Robert

Andrew,

SYSTRAY.EXE

It's a little (3kb) program that used to be loaded at startup
....a long time ago.

It's in C:/Windows\System32

I'm gonna guess that you're Not Afraid to use REGEDIT.

Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Right-Click in RIGHT Side Pane.

When the little NEW Dialog pops up, choose STRING VALUE.

Rename New Value#1 to SystemTray.

Now Right-Click SystemTray and choose MODIFY.

Type "systray.exe" (with quotes) in the Value data: box.

Close REGEDIT. Reboot.
