Missing Cookie Folders

I'm trying to help my father resolve an issue with his computer. He is
running XP SP3 Home Edition. His browser is IE8.

His computer will no longer remember passwords for a number of forums and
other sites where he logs in. Previously, he was able to do this, but it
stopped a month or so ago. We logged into one of the forums from my
computer, and it retained the log-in info, so I don't think the problem is
related to the forum's servers.

His privacy settings allow cookies, but I am unable to find any Cookies
folders in the Documents and Settings folders. I verified that Folder
Options are set to "show hidden files and folders." I took a shot at
creating a Cookies folder under Documents and Settings, but I get an error
msg that the folder already exists. It's not there!

I'd appreciate any suggestions where to go from here.

Thanks for your help,
Janet

You should ask IE questions in microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

However, IE 8 has added a new Internet Option: "Preserve Favorites
website data." Make sure that this option is checked, or cookies will be
deleted. There are other settings in Internet Options that may affect
cookies, such as InPrivate browsing.

Cookies should be located in C:/Documents and Settings\username\Cookies.
To see it, make sure that Hidden and System files are visible (Show
hidden files and folders; AND UNcheck Hide protected operating system
files).

My apologies. Since the Cookies folder is missing from the Documents and
Settings area of his Windows files, I felt sure the question was better
suited for an XP newsgroup than an IE newsgroup. Are you suggesting that IE8
deleted his Cookies folder? I'm afraid I'm seriously confused.

Uhh, IE8 cookies are located in:
C:/documents and settings\administrator\
\default user\
\local service\
\local service\local settings\temp\
\network service\ AND,
\username\ for EACH user.
It IS possible to set thing so that NO cookies can be allowed.
Some programs will intercept and prevent all cookies.
His privacy settings may allow cookies.

If it said the folder already existed, it already exists: It means you
missed one of the settings to be able to see it. In order to see ALL system
and hidden files, there are a total of 4 (FOUR) settings you must change
from default. Go back and look again, this time not stopping after finding
only the first one.
If you still can't work it out, come on back and I'll specifically detail
each one but it's too late to do that right now.

HTH,

Twayne

You also have to untick "Hide protected operating system files"
(Recommended) in Folder Options>View, to see the Cookies folder.
