Microsoft update woes

Hello. I have a WxpSP3 machine w/office 2007 sp2 on it. When I go to
the microsoft update site after a fresh reboot, it shows 54 updates for
me to download and install, but after downloading them, they fail to
update everytime. And it does not give me an error code to google for
or anything. All it says is

"Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the
Troubleshooter to try solve the problem."

When I click on the troubleshooter link, it just takes me to a blank
knowledgebase screen. Can someone suggest how I can get updates working
again? Thanks.

First, try configuring the system to Clean boot so as to rule out any
interference from 3rd party software -

How to configure Windows XP to start in a clean boot state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

NOTE: All 3rd party firewalls will be Disabled in the Clean boot state.
Open Control Panel > Windows Firewall to ensure the native XP firewall
is now On.

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Windows Update. When the site is
done initializing, click the Custom button.
See if the updates install now.
If no joy, close IE.

Please copy and paste at least the *last* 50 or so lines of the
WindowsUpdate.log into your reply -

Hi Wolf, thanks for the reply. I installed the windows installer 4.5
and going to the WU site does not install the WU agent. So I searched
for it at MS downloads site, but it did not come up in the results, only
security updates for it came up in the results. Updates still failed to
install. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Ignore this muppet because it is foolhardy to disable firewall and
antispyware/antivirus software.

For your problems, you need to delete everything from your
software Distribution Folder and the easiest way to do this, as
recommended on these newsgroups, is to boot into safe mode and
then go to:

<C:/WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution>

Delete everything and then reboot the system in the normal way.

You will get all the missing updates immediately.

This muppet is using a sledge hammer to crack a nut and in doing
so opening up your defenses for other kinds of attack.

Hope this helps and two fingers to MVPs who will be an endangered
species from this October.

You're a dead wrong, *troll*. The native XP firewall is now On and as
long as the OP's system doesn't visit any other site other then Windows
Update there is *no* risk to the system. NONE !

There is absolutely no logical reason to start with the deletion of
SoftwareDistribution if a 3rd party process is causing the updating
issue with *Windows* Update. XP systems that are opted into *Microsoft*
Update *do* experience the non-responsive issue.

The system is opted in to Microsoft Update (MU). Apparently, older XP
systems with 512 MB of RAM are experiencing this non-responsive issue.
You can choose to opt out of MU but you will have to visit MU with
Internet Explorer, wait for the page to finally load, then click the
Change settings link in the left frame.
Scroll down the page to the bottom to find where the system can be opted
out of MU.

*No* updates other then for the XP itself will be offered by Windows
Update. So, suggest you try the following first and then opt out of MU last.

0x80240020 - This problem occurs if the Automatic Updates service cannot
impersonate the logged-on user to finish downloading and installing the
update.

0x8004100E - This is a Windows Management Instrumentation message
indicating that the namespace specified cannot be located.
One issue may be that the registry value is incorrect or missing.
" To resolve this behavior, check the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Wbem\Scripting
The default namespace value should have the value data of root\cimv2. "

For the 800704dd message, please see this KB which also cites the
0x80240020 message - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341

See 'Section B: Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP' to verify the
registry entries.

Thanks for the reply/ I went through this process, and re-downloaded
all the updates, and it still fails to install.

54 updates?! /Yowza/ !!

Did you just install SP3 or possibly a Repair Install of WinXP for some
reason?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer?

Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

The machine actually has 1536mb ram, but it is an older machine.

Hi again Mow, thanks for your reply. :)

Opting out of MU did not work.

I also checked the reg entry for 0x8004100E and it was correct.

Next, I checked section B of kb910341 and found the SensLogn key with
all of the correct entries under the Notify_Disabled key. So I
replicated it into the Notify Key.

How frustratating, the updates are still not working. :(

What should I try next, thanks to all who are sticking by me to try and
help me fix this problem.

Howdy the poster formerly known as 'The Poster Formerly Known as Nina
DiBoy',

YW. Did you try updating *after* configuring the system to Clean boot ?
It is very likely that a '3rd party process' is causing interference
with the updating process.

Also, what is the installed antivirus/security suite; was *anything*
detected the last time the system was scanned with the AV ?

'3rd party processes' can be Security software or malware-related.
There's no sense resetting the updating components if Sec software or
even malware is the cause of the non-responsive, failure to update issues.

Sorry for the confusion, I posted from a different server initially.

Nah, it just doesn't get updated real often.

Kaspersky 6MP4 for windows workstations. File, mail, web protection are
turned on, anti-spam, anti-hacker (the firewall) and anti-spy are turned
off. It uses the windows firewall. I disable realtime protection when
running updates.

No to both of the above questions. Thanks for your response.

Again, thanks for your reply. Interestingly enough, when I shut it down
for the day yesterday, it had the "Install updates and shut down"
option, so I chose that and it installed 32 of the updates (the ones for
Windows XP). When I booted up this morning, it prompted me to download
the updates for office through AU, so I did and they are now installing.
I guess it just took the changes you suggested that I made plus a few
reboots to fix the problem. Thanks to Mow and PA Bear for the help!

Hey Idiot,

You don't need to visit any other site to be attacked or hacked.
Learn this fact by rote!

Any one correcting you becomes a troll. Very Nice Indeed. How
about anyone giving total and absolute rubbish advice should also
be branded a troll? Good Idea?

Actually, you're more of a HoopleHead than a troll.
