Does Win 7 have an application to check memoery.I had a BSOD and it was from
my memory.

I know I can download some free ones.??

Control Panel >System and Security >Administrative Tools >Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Along with what Dave-UK wrote, the memory diagnostics can also be run from
the boot menu. Press F8 while starting up to get to it.

That said, was it the physical memory that caused the BSOD, or an app
writing to an address in memory that set it?

The Control Panel path depends how the Control Panel viewing is set.
On my machine, with viewing set to small icons, the path is:
Control Panel >Administrative Tools >Windows Memory Diagnostic

I can also go directly from the Start menu with:
All Programs >Administrative Tools >Windows Memory Diagnostic

The options available can be confusing. I have to remember that not
everybody is going to have their computer set up the same way as mine.

Putting "MdSched.exe" into the START-->Search box should work for all. If
UAC is on, right-click on found result and choose RunAs Admin...

How about this route as well:
Start > Help and Support > Type ' memory ' into the box.
Select number 6.
