Earth movements are not rare. Large movements - described by the Richter scale - help compare the sizes of each movement. Quakes above a 5 can rattle nerves. Worse, quakes above 7 can create large amounts of damage. A string of quakes have now been reported by the media - in the regions known as the ring of fire (Mexico [7.0], Indonesia [8.6], Oregon [5.9]).

Are these quakes related? Well, we cannot blame fracking this time. Instead the quakes are most likely a cluster of random events - and as humans we tend to interpret clusters as something more.

Sorry - but we cannot predict quakes. No. We can only prepare for them. Therefore, double check your supplies of bottled water, cans of chili, and batteries for the flashlights.

    Finally - enjoy the ride.

USGS upgraded a new California quake to 5.3. This quake hit near Mendocino. Additionally, while writing the above post, Mexico was lowered to a 6.5.

You can get the latest on quakes from the USGS.
